Gemma Mendoza is Rappler's Head of Digital Strategy and concurrent Data Privacy Officer. In this capacity, she leads Rappler’s evolution in content, data, partnerships, as well as risk management on tech platforms. She also leads Rappler’s multi-pronged efforts to address disinformation in digital media, harnessing big data research, fact-checking, and community workshops. One of Rappler's founding team, she helped set up tech systems and initiated strategic projects that connect journalism and data with citizen action, particularly in relation to elections, disasters, and other social concerns.
Gemma co-authored Newsbreak's book 'The Enemy Within’ in 2011 on military corruption and civilian neglect. Her stories on governance and corruption, the security sector, disasters, and other social issues have won recognition in the Jaime V. Ongpin Awards for Investigative Journalism, the UNICEF-Philippine Press Institute Awards for Child-friendly Journalists, and the Asian Development Bank Institute’s Developing Asia Journalism Awards.
