Indra de Lanerolle is the director of the Journalism and Media Lab (jamlab.africa) at Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct in Johannesburg, Africa's first journalism and media accelerator and innovation lab. He is a visiting researcher at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg where he conducts internet research and teaches digital media entrepreneurship, digital media theory and television. He has published research on government and civil society use of technologies in accountability, on the 'internet of the poor' and mobile Internet use in Africa. He also regularly contributes to public and policy debates on internet and tech policy. He started his career as a journalist, television and film producer. His work has been recognised with a Peabody Award, an Emmy nomination and the Japan Governor's Prize. He teaches courses in television journalism and media innovation at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.
