Vice President of Innovation, News Media Alliance
Michael MaLoon is the News Media Alliance’s Vice President of Innovation. In this role, he works to further the collaboration, advocacy and advancement of the newspaper industry. Michael focuses on creating new strategic initiatives and designing unique partnerships that will propel innovation in the industry, working collaboratively with Alliance staff to execute strategic research and communications programs. In addition, he oversees communications and PR for the organization.
Michael has built an extensive executive career in media, publishing and marketing, focused on research-driven product development to create growth. He most recently served as the director of sales and operations at The Chronicle of Higher Education and The Chronicle of Philanthropy, where he led the launch of a new Chronicle Unlimited program that generated important incremental revenue. His previous positions include consulting for NextGen Marketing Group, digital director of The Buffalo News, director of recruitment advertising for Newsday Media Group, president of CyberInk, a Times Publishing Co. subsidiary, and online director of The Observer-Dispatch.
Under Michael’s leadership, The Buffalo News achieved aggressive revenue goals of more than 18 percentage points, including a nearly 23 percent increase in display advertising and 11 percent growth in digital classifieds. He also founded the subsidiary digital services agency Canalside Media, launched a new suite of mobile products and led the transition of all newspaper properties to a paid access model. Prior to this, as president of CyberInk, he increased online revenue for GoErie.com and its sister properties by more than 200 percent.
