Editorial Leaders 5, Managing and Leading Creative Newsrooms
So many publications, so many start-ups, so much competition -- in print, on the web and on mobile platforms. Such a confused, distracted and skeptical audience, seeking guidance and coverage it can trust. How do you distinguish your organization from the crowd? It all starts with leadership.
This advanced workshop dives deeply into the characteristics of an effective, even inspiring, leader in a modern news organization. Yes, there are natural leaders, but even they must practice and learn. Leadership skills can be taught -- we’ll teach them.
This workshop, divided into several sessions of between one and two hours over two days, helps you be a better leader. It equips you to develop other leaders. It looks at what’s important in a modern newsroom, what’s forever what’s new, what should be left behind.
The format each day provides lots of opportunity for questions, answers and discussion, and for examination of real challenges that participants bring to the group (should they volunteer to do so.)
Topics covered include:
- Communicating effectively and with integrity;
- How (and why!) to stop avoiding difficult discussions, how to prepare for them, how to conduct them;
- Building an effective, efficient organization;
- Identifying content priorities that make you stand out;
- Building ambition beyond daily news into every part of your organization;
- Coaching and training your staff to be winners;
- Defining and fostering healthy editor/reporter relationships to drive success
- Leading an ethical organization, and preparing it for the challenges that come with a focus on enterprising journalism.
Note: This programme can also be offered as in-house workshop
