To judge this year's awards we've brought together a panel of thought leaders, who draw on decades of expertise spent leading Africa's most significant media organisations.

Deputy Director, Digital Revenue Network, WAN-IFRA, France

Since joining WAN-IFRA in 1997, Valérie has accrued more than 20 years of experience as a media journalist. Currently, she is a team member of WAN-IFRA's Global Advisory division where she works with the Advisory Team in leading global consulting projects. She is also the Programme Lead for WAN-IFRA's top global conferences including: World News Media Congress and our Digital Media Event Series. She has contributed to numerous research reports, including  Alternative Revenue Streams for Publishers. As part of her research, Valérie interviewed numerous publishers who had found success discovering new business models - whether its through events, e-commerce, video or marketing services - Valérie has experience taking the pulse on what generates revenue for publishers.

Founder & CEO, frayintermedia, South Africa

Paula Fray has worked in media for more than three decades as a journalist, editor, trainer and media manager. Paula was the first female editor of the Saturday Star newspaper in South Africa. She is currently the managing director of the pan-African media training organisation frayintermedia, which she founded in 2005. The organisation has trained journalists, media leaders, civil society organisations, government officials and corporate leaders during its decade-long existence.

She is a trustee of Media Monitoring Africa and IRIN independent news agency. She is a Print and Digital Media SA fellow and a public representative on the Press Council of South Africa.

Paula graduated with a BJourn degree from Rhodes University and has a Woman and Law Certificate from UNISA. A recipient of the prestigious Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University, she is a former member of the Nieman Foundation Advisory Board at Harvard.

Executive Director World Editors Forum, WAN-IFRA, UK

Cherilyn Ireton heads up the World Editors Forum, the global network for editors within WAN-IFRA. She is a seasoned newspaper professional, having spent more than 20 years on South African newspapers, as journalist and editorial manger on the country's leading titles, the Sunday Times and Business Day. She rose to be Chief Operating Officer of BDFM Publishers, the business media joint venture between Pearson, owners of the Financial Times, and Times Media in South Africa which published Business Day newspaper, the Financial Mail magazine and Summit TV. She relocated to the UK in 2005 and owned an ran a London-based media consultancy, Presslinks, which advised a variety of international organizations and foreign governments.

Program Manager, Google News Initiative, United Kingdom

Sarah is a Program Manager with the Google News Initiative team where she works with the applicants and recipients of the DNI Fund in Europe and the GNI Innovation Challenges globally. She is a regular speaker at conferences in the UK and overseas, broadcast interviewee and commentator on issues relating to media, digital journalism and community.

Managing Editor, Digital, Standard Media Group PLC, Kenya

Carole is the Managing Editor, Digital at Standard Group Plc. and has 17 years of experience in print and online media. In her current position she is responsible for growing online audiences for broadcast and print brands in the Group. Previously, she worked at Genesis, a global internet consumer company, where, in 2015, she started www.tuko.co.ke, Kenya’s first viral news website that disrupted the Kenyan media landscape and was the first Managing Editor.

Schools Editor, The Straits Times & Correspondent at Singapore Press Holdings Ltd, Singapore

Serene got her first taste of journalism as a 10-year-old, creating a newsletter for her class in school, typing out stories on a typewriter in the teachers’ common room. Today, she is still creating and directing content for young people,  in her role as Schools Editor of The Straits Times in Singapore.

One of her most treasured experiences of journalism was being the Singapore representative of the Asia Journalism Fellowship (2011), which brings seasoned journalists from all over Asia to learn more from one another over three months. It gave her renewed perspective on journalism, and made her firm friends with other journalists particularly from Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Pakistan.

Serene has been a journalist for 14 years, of which the last 10 years have been working on The Straits Times’ News In Education programme. She was deputy editor for several years before becoming editor in 2016.

Sessional lecturer, Aga Khan University, Kenya

Joseph has been a journalist for 40 years. He has worked at senior management level in Kenya’s largest news organisations, overseeing newsroom operations, product development and realigning established titles to market changes. At different times he has served as Editorial director of the Nation Media Group and its rival, The Standard Media Group PLC. He rose through the ranks as a reporter, sub-editor and managing editor and headed the launch of East Africa’s first regional newspaper. He is currently an adjunct lecturer at the Aga Khan University, attached to the post-graduate programme and professional development courses.

Head of West Africa, BBC, Nigeria

Toyosi Ogunseye is the Head of West Africa at the British Broadcasting Corporation. She manages the operations and five language services of the BBC in Francophone Africa and Anglophone West Africa. An international presenter, she hosts the BBC World Service’s international debate programme, World Questions.

Ogunseye, who is presently the Vice President of the World Editors Forum and sits on the board of the World Association of News Publishers has over 15 years’ experience as an investigative journalist. She was the first female editor in the 41-year history of Punch Newspaper; Nigeria’s most widely read newspaper and has won over 40 local and international awards. 

Deputy CEO at Code For Africa, South Africa

Chris Roper is deputy CEO for the continent’s largest federation of civic technology and data journalism labs, Code for Africa (CfA).
Using over two decades of insights from building Africa’s largest online news and content portals, Chris shapes CfA’s civic engagement and scaling strategies. He also serves as director for CfA’s forensic data initiative, the African Network of Centres for Investigative Reporting (ANCIR). From 2015 - 2019, Chris’ role at CfA was underwritten by a Knight International Fellowship, with the International Centre for Journalists (ICFJ)

Prior to joining CfA, Chris was editor-in-chief of Africa’s first newspaper to establish an internet presence, the Mail & Guardian. Before M&G, Chris was editor-in-chief of Africa’s largest online publisher, 24.com, where he managed the merger of MWEB and News24 editorial content into the biggest digital content offering in Africa. 

Chris has taught journalism courses at the Universities of Pretoria, and the Polytechnic of Namibia. Chris has served as a judge on, among others, the SA Bookmark Digital Awards, the British Council Future of News competition, the NuMedia Plum Awards, the WAN-IFRA Digital Media Awards, and the PICA Awards. He frequently consults to publishing houses in his capacity as a Code for Africa strategist.

Director of Insights & Editor-in-Chief, WAN-IFRA, Germany

Dean is Director of Insights and Editor-in-Chief of WAN-IFRA, he is responsible for coordinating all activities related to the organisation's array of multimedia publications. He has more than 25 years’ experience working in the news publishing industry, much of that time spent researching, analysing, identifying and ultimately reporting about global media developments.

Deputy Director of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, United Kingdom

Meera is Deputy Director of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. Prior to that she worked out of Singapore for Handelsblatt Global Edition, after helping to launch the digital daily business paper in Berlin in 2014. She has also worked as a correspondent for the Associated Press and was the Africa correspondent for The Independent based in Nairobi.

Senior Programme Manager for New Initiatives, Code For Africa, South Africa

Ashlin manages Code for Africa’s business development team, helping to scale digital projects and products for newsrooms and social justice organisations. Previously, she managed Code for Africa's investment programmes, innovateAFRICA and impactAFRICA, working with project teams, data scientists, technologists, and researchers to align around Code for Africa’s core mission - creating actionable information and empowering citizens. Before joining CfA she was the online editor of e.tv where they won the IAB Bookmark Award in 2015 for publisher sites - mass appeal. She was also a finalist in the Publicis90 Startup Global Initiative. Outside of CfA work, she produces films as the co-founder of EightStreet Stories (8streetstories.com). In 2016 EightStreet Stories won LaunchLab’s MultiChoice Breakthrough Innovation Challenge and in 2017 they were awarded funding to produce an eight-part horror series for DSTV's On-Demand and YouTube channels

Founder, Agência Lupa & Associate Director of International Fact Checking Network (IFCN), Brazil & USA.

Cristina Tardáguila is the founder and director of Agência Lupa, the first fact-checking newswire service in Brazil. She graduated from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro in 2002, got her master’s degree in Journalism in Madrid in 2004 and her MBA degree on digital marketing in 2017, from Fundação Getulio Vargas, in Rio. Cristina in 38 year old and has worked at the two major daily newspapers in Brazil - O Globo and Folha de S.Paulo -, besides revista piauí and Agencia EFE. Cris is the author of two books by Intrinseca: "A Arte do Descaso" (about the biggest Brazilian art heist) and "Você foi Enganado" (about presidential lies). In 2017 she gave two TEDx talks on false news.  

CPO, Amedia Utvikling AS, Norway

Ole Werring (MBA and MA) is Chief Product Officer at Amedia Utvikling AS in Norway. He has previously worked as a management consultant with expertise in strategy analysis and implementation, innovation processes and leadership. Werring has background from several Norwegian media companies, among others as Director of Strategy and Innovation at Tun Media AS, Head of Digital at Nationen AS, Project Manager at Dagbladet AS, and Head of Innovation at the Norwegian Film Institute. Werring is participating in WAN-IFRA’s Media Professionals Programme (MPP) as mentor for media companies and professionals in Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar. Werring holds an MBA in Global Leadership and a Masters Degree in Media Science

Co-founder & CEO, Underlines, France

Marion is the Co-founder and CEO at Underlines, a consulting firm that helps publishers build and grow sustainable revenue strategies. She has worked for nearly 15 years for online press editors, including ELLE magazine and L’Obs. She later worked as Deputy Digital Director of the economic weekly Challenges, and the monthly Sciences et Avenir.
