Categories

These awards are open to news media companies and entities affiliated with the news media industry actively operating within the region. Entries must be prepared and uploaded by the news media organisation, news media organisation representative, advertising agency, or public relations firm working on the company's behalf. International media may apply as long as it has active operations within Latin America.

The competition is open to any project published or being held between May 2018 and July 2019.

  • Special Recognition to the Best Digital Journalism Project

    *Internal Nomination*

    SPECIAL RECOGNITION

    This category is open to specific journalistic projects or microsites that cover a current social reality in the continent, that include or combine elements of, and have applied to one or more of this year's  categories. (This is not an open category. Our jury will held an internal nomination.)

    The use of digital narrative tools, the scope of the project, and the impact it has achieved in its community will be evaluated, as well as the general journalistic quality of the content. The jury will pick the top 3 projects that stood out based on the previously mentioned characteristics.

    * The winner of this category does not compete at WAN-IFRA's World Digital Media Awards

  • Best News Website or Mobile Service

     

    This category will evaluate the content and general organization of a general news site, includes mobile and desktop web platforms, as well as apps (it does not include microsites). 
    Entries must demonstrate combined excellence in content, and UX, as well as value to readers and advertisers. Innovative design, the use of multimedia (such as audio, video, infographics, photography, etc) to better tell the story, speed of access and the overall distribution will also be taken into consideration.

  • Best in Lifestyle, Sports, Entertainment Website or Mobile Services

    This category is dedicated to lifestyle, sports or entertainment products, includes mobile web and apps, as well as desktop. Entries must demonstrate combined excellence in content and user experience (UX), as well as value to readers and advertisers. Innovative design, the use of multimedia (such as audio, video, infographics, photography, etc.) to better tell the story, speed of access and the service's overall contribution to revenue goals will also be taken into consideration.

  • Best Use of Online Video
 (including VR)

     

    Entries should demonstrate an ability to relate a story in a concise and objective way and improve the reader experience and engagement with the news brand. There should be consideration of the appropriate video format for specific platforms (e.g. Facebook vs YouTube). The technical quality of the shooting and realisation as well as the possible emotional and aesthetic impact of the video will also be taken into consideration.

  • Best Data Visualisation

    Entries should demonstrate excellence in design, usefulness and clarity of information conveyed on infographics or any other innovative format, in the context of breaking news or non-breaking news, information or entertainment. Special attention will be paid to creativity and visual impact, as well as the effectiveness on mobile devices.

  • Best Digital News Start-up

    This category is open to all independent news-related startups or larger news publishers launching new businesses or spin-offs. Entries should demonstrate clear value to their target market, stand out from the crowd and be able to outline a current or future business model.

  • Best in Social Media Engagement

    Entries should demonstrate an original offering, measurably grow user engagement, make best use of the relevant social media platform, and actively reflect the voice and tone of the news brand.

  • Best Native Advertising / Branded Content Campaign

    This entry is open to publishers or publisher-owned agencies creating branded content / native advertising. We are looking for campaigns that have a clear brand voice and identity, that play well across different platforms, quality content, and demonstrate high levels of reader engagement.

  • Best Paid Content Strategy (incl. pay wall, membership or crowd funding models)

    Best new paid content initiative or campaign, with the aim of increasing revenue from digital subscriptions or one-off purchases, membership models, donations, crowdfundings, among others. Entries should demonstrate understanding of brand strengths, clarity for the reader or customer, an effective call to action, and measurable results.

  • Best Digital Marketing Campaign for News Brand

    This category is open for publishers' multiplatform marketing campaigns (can be through radio, TV, digital, print, etc.) towards their own new or existing news brands. Entries should have clear messaging, an effective social strategy, strong own brand voice and efficient targeting.

  • Best Digital Project to Engage Younger and/or Millennial Audiences

     

    Entries must demonstrate strong evidence of the publishing company’s success in engaging youth (children and teenagers) and/or millennial audiences around any kind of initiative, including but not limited to news literacy, editorial content and/or public service.
