World Editors Forum - Women in News Summit

A unique global gathering of chief editors, publishers and CEOs passionate about media freedom and taking action to ensure a sustainable news industry.

The 70th World News Media Congress and the 25th World Editors Forum took place in Estoril, Portugal from June 6-8, 2018

#WNC18: Relationships… that is where publishers are now focusing most of their energy and engagement. And never was that more on display during three inspiring days in Estoril. Whether it was in the packed Women In News Summit, World Editors Forum, or the numerous other sessions, editors and publishers from all over the world came together to talk about solutions, moreso than just problems. Our editorial coverage includes articles on our Congress Blog, pictures of the event on Flickr and the presentations, which are accessible here. And don´t miss our wrap-up video and the speaker interviews on our youtube channel.

Stand up for the future of news

"We are at a pivotal moment when trust in discerning media providers is increasingly precious. The importance of reader-based revenue is supported by technologies helping us to better engage with our audiences. We are discovering new forms of collaboration and seeking creative, innovative ways to cover news. At the heart of it all is, and will always be, quality journalism.”  - Vincent Peyrègne, CEO, WAN-IFRA

In 2017, the Golden Pen of Freedom, WAN-IFRA's annual press freedom award, was presented to Turkish journalist and former editor-in-chief of Cumhuriyet newspaper, Can Dündar (photo).

Portugal’s vibrant culture and dynamic media scene serve as an ideal setting for the global media to gather.

Our 2018 Congress has an extra special dimension: it marks 70 years since the organisation was founded. In 1948, in the aftermath of World War II, editors from the clandestine press in France and the Netherlands were determined to fight for the survival of a free press worldwide. They formed an association, FIEJ. While much has changed, their mission still binds WAN-IFRA's members today.
