Astrid Ascar has 29 years’ experience in the media industry. She began her career as a radio and TV journalist and producer, and started working in the digital media and marketing space in 2004. She has worked for media brands including DStv, Carte Blanche, Summit TV (now Business Day TV), The Home Channel, CNBC Africa, SABC TV, SAfm, Highveld and in more recent years co-hosting an online radio business show on Hot919 fm. 

Astrid’s consulting work focus for the past 10 years has been digital and integrated marketing and communications strategies, content creation and production, key messaging and copywriting, website audits including UI and UX consulting, helping clients implement plans across owned, earned and paid digital platforms, and using data analytics to generate business insights. She also MCs, gives talks, and facilitates workshops and conferences, and offers training in digital media and marketing, key message crafting, media interview skills, presentation skills, and crisis comms. 

Since March this year Astrid has been fulfilling the role of Chief Strategy Officer for the Wunderman South Africa group. 

CEO and co-founder, KIT, Sweden

CEO and co-founder of KIT, a digital media startup focused on high-quality journalism. Prior to that, most recently he ran the digital business division at Bonnier Tidskrifter. He has held marketing and digital media roles at Unilever and NBC Universal, among others. He currently serves on the board of Bonnier Corporation in the U.S., Mediafy, Beckmans College of Design and IAB Sweden. He has a B.S. from the London School of Economics and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. 

ICFJ Knight Fellow

Catherine Gicheru is an International Center for Journalists Fellow. Gicheru is a veteran journalist with two of the leading media organizations in the region. She was the first woman bureau chief and the first female news editor of the Nation Media Group in the region. She is also the founding editor of the daily newspaper, the Star.
She co-founded PesaCheck, East Africa’s budget and public finance fact-checking and verification initiative. She is a member of the Advisory Board of the Reuters' Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University, was a member of the advisory board of the Open Society Foundation’s Fiscal Governance Program which seeks to promote openness, accountability, and equity in fiscal and economic systems around the world. She was an advisory member of the State of Technology in Global Newsrooms survey conducted by the ICFJ which looked at how media professionals are adopting and adapting to digital technologies.

Gicheru is a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, a Reuters Institute Journalism fellow at Oxford University, and a 1992 IWMF Courage in Journalism award winner.

Freelance journalist, journalism trainer and media consultant, Cape Town, South Africa

Raymond Joseph began his journalism in 1974 as a cadet reporter at South Africa’s leading anti-apartheid newspaper, the Rand Daily Mail. He has worked for mainstream, community and tabloids newspapers in senior editorial positions.

He is a former ICFJ/Knight International Journalism Fellow and an ex editor and board member of The Big Issue South Africa, which he helped launch in 1996.
Over the decades he has witnessed many changes in journalism and has regularly reinvented himself, including making the transition to multimedia and data-driven storytelling. He is a former head of Code for South Africa’s media programme and its data journalism academy.

Today, he works as a freelance journalist, journalism trainer and media consultant. He has a particular interest in Twitter and other social media platforms as journalism tools, and also is an expert in online and social media content verification. He offers training to journalists in these areas and also works as a freelance assessor for the Poynter-hosted International Fact-Checking Network.

Peter Lamb

Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Lamb is a Strategy Consultant, now living in Miami, Florida, and specialising in media companies. "The goal of my consulting practice is to utilise the sophisticated strategic marketing principles and techniques, learned while doing my MBA at Harvard Business School, meshing them with a hands-on sales approach, to generate new revenue streams for publications and websites. ROI is achieved by focusing on NEW-NEW revenue ... from customers that have never used our products before: print or online."

Brand strategist, public speaker, and advertising commentator, Johannesburg, South Africa

Andy has been passionate about the linkage between creativity and commercial effectiveness throughout his career. This led to his involvement in the APEX awards, South Africa’s equivalent of the Effies, almost 15 years ago.  He has served as Chair of the APEX Jury for over 10 years, and in 2015 was chosen as a judge in the Creative Effectiveness category of the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity, which is recognised as the world’s premier creative awards programme. 

He began his career as a brand manager, but after seven years in marketing management, chose to move to the advertising side of the fence, joining Ogilvy & Mather in Johannesburg. 

In 1997, Andy co-founded Yellowwood Brand Architects, the first specialist brand strategy consultancy in South Africa.  Yellowwood became part of the TBWA Group in 2009 and is recognised as a leader in its field across Africa.  Andy remains involved as Chairman of Yellowwood.

He recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award from his peers in the brand communications industry.

Digital transformation, content strategy and innovation consultant, WEF Board Member, UK

Dmitry is an expert in digital transformation, content strategy, and innovation. He worked for 21 years at the BBC in London where he was responsible for developing and implementing the BBC’s digital editorial offer for 40 non-English foreign language new services. Originally from Moscow, Russia, Dmitry worked in various editorial-development roles for the digital section of BBC News. These roles required liaison between editorial, product and strategy teams in order to drive innovation and develop new ways of reaching audiences, increasing engagement across the world and, crucially, driving culture change is newsrooms. He is an experienced digital leader in content creation, specialising in growing audiences across the world, driving editorial changes in newsrooms and adapting the way organisations work in digital space, especially around content innovation and audience engagement.
After his years at the BBC, he joined Culture Trip, a startup operating at the intersection of media and travel. He is now pursuing new adventures. Dmitry's main area of expertise is on the intersection between Editorial, Organisational, Strategy and Product sectors.

Associate professor​ at University ​of Gothenburg, Sweden and professor (II) at Volda University College, Norway

Westlund is associate professor at University ​of Gothenburg (Sweden) and professor (II) at Volda University College (Norway). He is an award winning researcher and teacher. He has researched the production, distribution and consumption of news through various methods for a decade, focusing especially on the shifts towards digital technologies such as mobile media.

He has also done research on technological dependence, media innovation, mobile search, media trust, etc. Westlund has authored more than 100 different publications, including articles in approximately 20 different journals, official inquiries for the Swedish government and the EU-commission, and many book chapters. He serves on the editorial board of six different journals, and has guest edited special issues/sections for two different journals.

From 2017 to 2020 he leads a major research project on digital journalism, for which he received a large grant together with professors in Sweden and the US. He is also an external collaborator/professor for research grant projects focusing on mobile media and other ICTs in relation to journalism, in Singapore and Spain respectively.
