Krautreporter was founded in 2014 by Sebastian Esser (publisher), Philipp Schwörbel (managing director) and Alexander von Streit (editor-in-chief). Until 13 June 2014, 15,000 subscribers (“members”) raised 900,000 euros to finance the project. The donors paid 60 euros for the first year and thus had the opportunity to comment on the freely readable articles on the platform. The beta version of the online magazine was released for subscribers in September 2014 and finally officially for all readers on 24 October 2014.
