Combating misinformation and fake news

Misinformation is false or inaccurate information that includes rumors, insults and pranks, while examples of more deliberate disinformation, malinformaiton include malicious content such as hoaxes, spearphishing and propaganda.

This 2 days of workshop will cover the following;

1) The state of misinformation in India
 
This section of the training is to inform the audience about how the issue of misinformation from his nascent stage in 2011-12 has become a major issue now, and how it is being systematically propagated by different political parties and individuals and the role of social media companies and more.
 
2) Types of misinformation
 
This delves into the various different strains of misinformation - from false or misleading context to morphed/photoshopped media to online frauds, the audience is introduced to the various kinds of distortions that one can expect while looking out for misinformation on social media.
 
3) Image verification
 
Image verification session shows various techniques using various digital tools to figure out the origins of an image circulating on social media and chat apps such as WhatsApp. Participants will be given exercises on this part.
 
4) Video verification
 
Video verification session shows various techniques using various digital tools to figure out the origins of a video circulating on social media and chat apps such as WhatsApp. A practical oriented session.
 
5) Find viral content
 
This section delves into how to discover content that is being circulated on social media, and that may have an element of misinformation. Hands-on session.
 
6) How to write a convincing fact-check

This section takes the audience through ins and outs of writing fact-checks - which includes a recommended structure and elements that should be included in a fact-check.  Participants will be given exercises for this session.
 
7) Search strategies for different platforms.
 
This section teaches the audience how to use various search platforms effectively to utilise it for fact-checking.
