Elske Schouten is deputy editor-in-chief of NRC, a quality newspaper in The Netherlands. Together with the rest of the team she is responsible for the editorial coverage and implementation of digital strategy. NRC has been focussing on digital first publishing, newsletters and has launched three successful podcasts. Prior to this, Elske was the editor of the Foreign Desk, responsible for international coverage and NRC’s network of 22 foreign correspondents. She has worked in Jakarta for five years as NRC’s correspondent for Southeast Asia. Educated as a biologist, Elske started at NRC in 2005 as a business reporter. She lives in Amsterdam, has two daughters and is an enthusiastic amateur pianist.
