Editor Digital Content Hub BBC World Service, United Kingdom

Hernando Alvarez is a journalist with over twenty years of experience. Currently Editor of the Global Content Hub of the BBC, he is at the frontline of digital innovation in the World Service. He started his career in 1992 as a reporter in his native Colombia and after working on national newspapers and press agencies, he joined the BBC World Service in 2000. He worked as a radio producer and correspondent and covered the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. In 2006, he was appointed editor of BBC Mundo and in 2012 became the regional editor of the Americas. This region is seen by senior management as the digital hot house of the BBC World Service, and an example of editorial innovation.

Strategic Partnerships Manager for news, EMEA region, Facebook, United Kingdom

Sarah Brown is strategic partnerships manager for news, EMEA region for Facebook. She has 15 years of experience working in digital and social media for newsrooms around the world such as the BBC, Al Jazeera and CNN. She is based in London.

Pete is responsible for PA’s editorial content across all formats. He also leads the continuing transformation of the agency to a digital-focused, multi-platform business.

Pete Clifton joined PA from MSN in 2015, after three years leading its 70-strong editorial team. Before that, he spent 15 years at the BBC in a number of senior editorial roles including, Head of Editorial Development, Head of News Interactive, Editor of the BBC News website and launch Editor of the BBC Sport website.

Director of Video Products, Reuters

Nick is responsible for leading video and television products globally for Reuters, the world’s leading news agency.  Prior to joining Reuters Nick built up nearly 20 years of experience in the news and entertainment industries as an award-winning digital producer, commissioner and product development specialist. 

He started his career in the late 90s as an online journalist and was subsequently involved in the development of pioneering digital news services for ITN, CNN and BBC News. In 2005 he was appointed the BBC’s commissioning editor for interactive television, and then in 2007 digital commissioner for BBC factual and documentaries, where his projects won a number of major industry awards including a BAFTA and two digital Emmys. In 2011 Nick moved into the world of advertising, joining WPP’s MediaCom as Managing Partner & Head of Content, where he led the agency’s strategic thinking about the role of content in brand communications and headed the 50-strong ‘Beyond Advertising’ division. He then joined the world of start-ups as VP for Content, Strategy & Partnerships at Little Dot Studios, a digital studio backed by All3 Media. Nick’s commercial work includes creating digital content and TV programming for clients including Volkswagen, Coca Cola and Samsung.  y.

 

Senior Editor, Digital, DW – Deutsche Welle, Germany

Esra Dogramaci is Senior Editor, Digital at Deutsche Welle. Formerly she worked as a digital consultant at BBC World Service where she worked with BBC Arabic on a digital transformation across online, video, radio and social media. Previously, she led a team that looked after 20 languages YouTube channel’s with results stretching to 550% growth in just a year, then leveraging that growth in experimental formats for social and mobile video. Esra joined the BBC from Al Jazeera in Qatar and Turkey and prior to that was at UNICEF and UN headquarters working in communications throughout. Esra has significant experience in digital transformation across news and current affairs, particularly in social video and off platform growth and development. She’s also a former national team athlete, representing Australia in Ice Hockey.

Lotta Edling is Editor-in-Chief of Dagens industri, a leading business newspaper in Sweden. Dagens industri is part of the business area Bonnier News along with Dagens Nyheter, Expressen, Sydsvenskan/Helsingborgs Dagblad and Bold Printing.

Lotta has been head of the news desk for Dagens industri since 2009 and has extensive experience as a journalist and editorial leader from business publications such as Affärsvärlden, Ekonomi24 and Veckans Affärer.

Alison Gow is Audience and Content Director North West with Reach plc (formerly Trinity Mirror). She has experience implementing and assessing new ways of engaging audiences across the newsrooms, working with external partners to bring new ideas and technology to their journalism. This includes working with editors to champion exciting new ways of telling stories across multiple platforms, promoting a strong editorial culture of storytelling, reader awareness and collaboration across Reach plc's brands.

A journalist and blogger who has worked in the UK regional press for more than 20 years, she is a former editor of the Daily Post and Wales on Sunday.

CEO & Founder, RESI Media, Germany

Martin Hoffmann is CEO and founder of RESI Media UG which built "Resi"- a new personal news assistant. Resi is a chat bot that lives inside an app and delivers the most important news of the day the same way a good friend would do on a messaging app. Hoffmann was previously Head of Social Media at WeltN24.

Director Development, WeltN24, Germany

Lajos Lange is leading the development at WeltN24. Since 2012 he has been responsible for the production systems for the CMS, Web and native App Products. In 2016, he transformed the development unit from a classical IT operations model towards a cloud based DevOps culture. In 2011, he became Project Manager at Axel Springer IT and introduced agile methodologies to his organization. He started his career in 2007 at the Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS in the field of telecommunication networks (NGN). Before he studied multimedia engineering at the University of Wismar.

Digital Reporter, Nice Matin, France

Aurore Malval is digital reporter at Nice-Matin, the largest regional daily newspaper publisher in South-East France, where she is part of the "Impact-journalism" team. This new digital offer was build from scratch after the employees raised enough funding to acquire the regional group Nice-Matin (which also publishes Var-Matin and Monaco-Matin). She works on producing innovative storytelling forms and new ways of engaging the audience.

Established in 1944, the Nice Matin group is the largest regional daily newspaper publisher in South-East France. The group publishes the Nice-Matin, Var-Matin and Monaco-Matin daily newspapers. In 2014, its employees raised enough funding to acquire the regional group and built a new digital offer from scratch. More on their story here.

 

Member of the Chief Editorial Team at Tages-Anzeiger, SonntagsZeitung, Head of Digital and Newsnet, Switzerland

Michael is a member of the chief editorial team at Tages-Anzeiger, one of the best known daily newspapers in Switzerland, and also leads the departments Digital and Newsnet which is a coalition of Swiss newspaper websites. Michael holds this role since 2013. He is responsible for the online content of the Newsnet sites, digital developments and the innovation team. From 1993 to 2002, Marti was a journalist at SonntagsZeitung, Das Magazin and Facts. In 2002, he became a member of the founding team of NZZ am Sonntag. In 2004, Marti joined the weekly published and politics and economics oriented magazine Facts as a member of the chief editorial team, where he managed the culture and society department. Four years later, in 2008, he was appointed deputy chief editor of Tages-Anzeiger Online and Newsnet.

Thomas Mattsson is responsible editor of the Swedish Expressen media house. Previously, he held the positions of head of Expressen's digital media and formerly Managing Editor, News Editor, Head of the Stockholm edition, Head if the Business Section.

Expressen was awarded as "Newspaper of the Year" in 2016 and has 2.6 million readers per day in print and online. The paper ("Expressen") has two regional editions ("GT", "Kvallsposten") and the site ("Expressen.se") has several sub sites. Expressen TV is the Swedish affiliate to CNN.

Researcher at the Computational Propaganda Project, Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, UK

Selected as a Fulbright Scholar, Lisa-Maria studied Communication Technologies & Diplomacy at the Georgetown University, Washington DC, holds a B.A. in Communication Science from the Ludwig-Maxmilians-University, Munich, and a Master degree in Social Science of the Internet from the Oxford Internet Institute.

Lisa-Maria has worked in various fields in the (digital) communications sector including radio & broadcast news journalism (ARD), communication consulting (Allianz Singapore) and Marketing (Coca-Cola, BBDO). She has conducted research at SDA Bocconi, Milan, the National University of Singapore and Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich.

Abba is an independent consultant, with clients like YouTube where she helps creators make successful brand partnerships and Google, where she mentors early stage start ups in brand and marketing strategy and investor pitches. Prior to that she was Marketing Director at Lumen Research, Director of Advertising Strategy at News UK, and a Managing partner at Media agency Universal McCann.

Digital transformation, content strategy and innovation consultant, WEF Board Member, UK

Dmitry is an expert in digital transformation, content strategy, and innovation. He worked for 21 years at the BBC in London where he was responsible for developing and implementing the BBC’s digital editorial offer for 40 non-English foreign language new services. Originally from Moscow, Russia, Dmitry worked in various editorial-development roles for the digital section of BBC News. These roles required liaison between editorial, product and strategy teams in order to drive innovation and develop new ways of reaching audiences, increasing engagement across the world and, crucially, driving culture change is newsrooms. He is an experienced digital leader in content creation, specialising in growing audiences across the world, driving editorial changes in newsrooms and adapting the way organisations work in digital space, especially around content innovation and audience engagement.
After his years at the BBC, he joined Culture Trip, a startup operating at the intersection of media and travel. He is now pursuing new adventures. Dmitry's main area of expertise is on the intersection between Editorial, Organisational, Strategy and Product sectors.

News Director, NRK (Norwegian public service broadcaster), Norway

Helje Solberg is News Director of NRK, the Norwegian public service broadcaster. Prior to joining NRK, she was CEO/Editor of VGTV and Executive Managing Editor for VG, the largest Norwegian media house on paper and internet combined. Helje is chair of Faktisk.no, Norway's collaborative fact-checking initiative. She is on the advisory board of the World Editors Forum, is the head of the organising committee of Schibsted Journalism Awards and is on the Board of MBL (Norwegian Media Businesses’ Association). She is a member of the Oslo Editor Association and is a member of SKUP’s Advisory Committee. She has spent a year at Phillips Academy, Andover, has studied Russian, social anthropology and politics. Before becoming editor of VGTV she served as Executive Managing Editor for VG, the largest Norwegian daily. Solberg has worked for a number of Norwegian newspapers. She has experience across all platforms in VG, where she started working as a political reporter in 1994. The following year she received the SKUP Award for Investigative Journalism for the so-called “AUF Scandal” (which led to the imprisonment of former treasures and leaders of the Worker’s Youth League for membership fraud).

Editorial & Programming Director, CNN Digital Worldwide, United Kingdom

Inga Thordar is the editorial and programming director of CNN Digital Worldwide, overseeing international digital news and sport content. She was previously BBC's editor on World News Television bringing together TV and digital production teams and commissioning. Thordar edited the BBC's news front page as well as lead digital innovations on both TV and radio platforms. Prior to that, she lead a team of video journalists at the BBC who used the latest technology available to create innovative quality videos for digital and TV properties. An Iceland native, Thordar is based in London and a graduate of King's College London and the University of Iceland.

UK Editor, Mashable, United Kingdom

Anne-Marie Tomchak is the UK Editor of Mashable, a media and entertainment company at the forefront of tech, science and digital culture. Heading up Mashable's UK operations from London, Anne-Marie is an innovative journalist and filmmaker with a track record of producing original storytelling on digital and broadcast media. Before joining Mashable, she was a reporter and presenter for the BBC, where she launched the social media investigative unit BBC Trending and developed the corporation’s mobile video offering on the BBC News app. In 2014 Anne-Marie was nominated for a Radio Academy Award for Innovation after breaking a story about the ‘offer’ of illegal drugs on Instagram, which led to a change in policy by the platform. She also broke the world exclusive revealing that the viral video ‘Syria Hero Boy’ was faked. Having spent the past 15 years reporting for national and international broadcasters (including Deutsche Welle, American Public Media, NPR and RTE) Anne-Marie has become one of the leading digital media voices contextualizing the role of technology and social media in modern life. In November 2016 she fronted the RTE documentary ‘Cloud Control: Who Owns Your Data?’ which explored big data and digital fingerprints for RTE Science Week. She was recently listed in The Irish Times '30 Irish Women You Need to Know' for International Women's Day and is one of Silicon Republic's '30 Incredible Irish people leading a European invasion' as part of their Sci-Tech 100.

President, World Editors Forum, USA

David was Chief Executive Officer of TheStreet, Inc., a New York-based financial news and information company, from mid-2016 until February, 2019. TheStreet was comprised of five businesses based in the U.S., the UK and India, with more than 600 employees, and including its flagship website, TheStreet.com. Most of the businesses were sold in late 2018 and David left to devote his energies to fighting for journalism through WEF.

Before joining TheStreet as CEO in 2016, David was Editor-in-Chief of USA Today, responsible for news coverage on America’s largest newspaper and fifth-largest digital news portfolio. David directed more than 400 journalists and worked with another 3,000 tied to 100 newspapers owned by USA Today parent company Gannett Inc.

 David joined USA Today in mid-2012 from MarketWatch, where he was also Editor-in-Chief. David ran MarketWatch through eight years of ownership by Dow Jones Co. and subsequently, News Corp., and four years before that as a public company which owned the website CBS MarketWatch. Dave also wrote a weekly column for MarketWatch, and was twice honored by the Society of American Editors and Writers for his commentary.

Before joining MarketWatch, Dave spent five years working for Bloomberg, almost all of it in London, where he ran a team that covered the financial services industry throughout Europe. Before Bloomberg, he spent six years as a reporter and columnist for The Boston Herald. He’s a graduate of Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism and currently splits his time between New York City and Corte Madera, Ca.

David Callaway is president of the World Editor’s Forum, a unit of WAN-IFRA, and a board member for the International Center for Journalists.

Yannis Capodistrias is Managing Director at Liquid Media, a leading Greek publisher. He was born in Athens and studied Economics and Computing Science in Manchester. He started working in the Advertising Sector and then joined easyJet Airline as Marketing Manager for Greece, Italy and Eastern Europe. He has served as Managing Director Europe at Sportingbet and is currently also Managing Director of Zatrix, a marketing services company. He is the Vice Chairman of IAB Hellas.

Head of International, Google News Lab, UK

Matt Cooke is Head of International at the Google News Lab, a team dedicated to working with publishers to provide training, discuss innovative partnerships and experiments. Matt has been at Google for 5 years, and recently led Google's UK election and EU referendum projects - he also launched Europe’s first News Lab Fellowship scheme. Before that he was a television reporter and producer at BBC News for 8 years. Whilst at BBC News, Matt reported on a range of stories including London's preparations for the Olympics, the Royal wedding and multiple elections.
