HELSINKI'S FORUM VIRIUM JOINS TELIA'S 5G FINLAND NETWORK

MARCH 2018 - The Helsinki city council innovation subsidiary Forum Virium has joined the 5G Finland network launched by Telia Finland, which aims to create and pilot 5G applications. Forum Virium's goal is to make Helsinki the world's "smartest" city, in co-operation with companies, academia and residents. Forum Virium development director Pekka Koponen said it wants to make Telia and its other partners to be a leading test platform. READ MORE

Finland’s judicial system is the most independent in the world, its police the most trusted, its banks the soundest, its companies the second most ethical, its elections the second freest, and its citizens enjoy the highest levels of personal freedom, choice and wellbeing. The Nordic country’s 5.5 million inhabitants are also the third most gender-equal in the world and have the fifth lowest income inequality. MEDIA HONEYPOT SHINES A LIGHT ON EUROPEAN MEDIA START-UPS IN HELSINKI

FEB 2018 - The Media Honeypot program – expertly curated by Janina Salo-Glasemann and her team – was emceed by the estimable Ralph Simon, whose bon mots in Finnish and Swedish brought more than a few chuckles from the crowd. Tomas Franzén, CEO of Bonnier, discussed how the company has managed to move into the digital space, while also nurturing a venture arm. He reminded the audience that, at its core, Bonnier’s chief job is to promote and protect democracy; a welcome message during these times. Moritz Holzgraefe, with Axel Springer, was one of several major publishers on the lookout for new startups; his company has certainly led the way in transforming a proud old publisher into a digital powerhouse. Laura Avonius, co-founder of Data Refinery, showed how her unit at Aller Media turned the company around by using its own data and spun it off as Data Refinery. READ MORE

Aller Finland launches a new company around its booming data business: Data Refinery Ltd. The new company commercializes data in Finland, also aiming at international markets where it has seen a promising start in the Nordic countries. Data Refinery aims to attract corporate customers who want to commercialize their data for sales purposes, and who want to develop their existing business with data. Aller Media was the first media company in Finland to commercialize its data for external use as part of its business transformation from a print media company to a company that offers a wide range of content, marketing and data services. FINNISH RESEARCHERS EXAMINE SPOTIFY'S ARTIST PAYMENT SCHEME, SUGGEST ALTERNATIVE

FEB 2018 - Music streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music help artists get songs onto listeners' playlists with just a few steps, but how artists are paid is a little more convoluted. In a rare move in 2016, Spotify released data about its streaming payment scheme for the month of March of that year to Aalto University. A recent joint study by Finnish music industry organisations and Aalto University took a closer look at those numbers and compared the current streaming payment scheme with a different compensation model. FINLAND SEDUCING INNOVATIVE IMMIGRANTS WITH RESIDENCE PERMITS

FEB 2018 - In a bid to attract innovations from non-EU countries, Finnish authorities will lure talent with "startup residence permits." In the future, leading Finnish companies may therefore be founded by Indians, Americans or Africans. Starting April, Finland will issue residence permits to non-EU citizens, provided that they come up with radiant business ideas, national broadcaster Yle reported. A foreign company's prospects for excelling on both the Finnish and the international market will be assessed by the Business Finland organization, with a staff of around 600 people and almost 40 offices abroad. EXPORTS AND TURNOVER INCREASED BY 35% IN SMES FUNDED BY BUSINESS FINLAND

FEB 2018 - In 2017, Business Finland issued most of its funding to Small and medium-sized enterprises. Innovation funding had a great impact in the growth and success of companies. "Small and medium-sized enterprises having received Tekes innovation funding grew both their turnover and exports by 35 per cent during the period of 2013 to 2016. At the same time, other SMEs increased their exports by 4 per cent," says Pekka Soini, Director General of Business Finland. Business Finland issued funding totalling EUR 510 million in 2017. The share of grants was EUR 221 million, the share of loans slightly more than EUR 176 million and that of research funding EUR 112 million. A positive funding decision was awarded to 4,485 projects out of 6,300 applications. READ MORE

ALMA MEDIA'S FINANCIAL STATEMENTS RELEASE 2017: STRONG GROWTH IN THE FOURTH QUARTER

In the Alma Markets segment, the basic business was supported by the continued strong economic development in Eastern Central Europe and the Finnish economy returning to growth. The business segment also implemented highly active sales efforts and expanded its product portfolio. Costs were increased by investments in sales and marketing as well as the development of online services, such as the renewed Etuovi online service. In the Alma News & Life segment, digital advertising saw strong growth and was at a record level in October–December. Growth was especially strong in mobile and content marketing. The development can be attributable to major advertisers shifting from print media to national digital media. Digital business now constitutes more than half of the segment’s revenue. Content revenue declined in October–December due to a decrease in Iltalehti’s print circulation.  READ MORE

BUSINESS FINLAND LAUNCHES ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE PROGRAMME

The objective of the new Business Finland programme, AI Business, is to make Finland the best country in the world to develop and utilise artificial intelligence and platform economy and to build global ecosystems and test platforms to attract investment. The AI Business program funds Finnish start-up, SME, midcap and large companies in all fields developing and utilising AI and platform economy in business. The programme also offers international networks and export services like matching selected companies with large global companies. The four-year AI Business programme’s (2018-2022) budget is EUR 200 million, of which Business Finland covers approximately half. In addition EUR 60 million can be used e.g. to fund digital platforms, resulting in significant network effects. READ MORE

2018 BLOOMBERG INNOVATION INDEX

Jan 2018 - Bloomberg Innovation Index 2018: Singapore jumped ahead of European economies Germany, Switzerland and Finland into third place on the strength of its top ranking in the tertiary-efficiency category. The index scores countries using seven criteria, including research and development spending and concentration of high-tech public companies. Nov 2017 - The Finnish companies were recognised for their expertise in inbound marketing, which draws customers through content marketing, social media marketing and search engine optimisation (SEO). Sales Communications was recognised for the second successive year in the Partner of the Year category and doubled its catch this year with another HubSpot Impact Award in the Happiest Customers category. Zeeland Family meanwhile, took home an award for Integrations Innovation, recognising its creative integration of inbound marketing with e-commerce, which enabled the marketing to automatically connect with the online store. LUMOA: HELPING COMPANIES TAKE CONTROL OF CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE

According to Lumoa, customer satisfaction and the experience that leads to it is often a key strategic target even though most of the acquired knowledge makes little difference to business operations. Lumoa aims to transform customer experience management into something more influential. Lumoa provides an online tool that not only analyzes the numerical net promoter score (NPS), but also the reasons behind the given ratings. The startup believes that open questions make a difference, as they highlight opportunities for improvement. By analyzing both numeric data as well as the sentiment and topics behind it, Lumoa's tool manages to calculate the key drivers influencing NPS. The tool utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) and can process feedback in 60 languages. Lumoa's focus is not on grammatical accurateness, but rather on acquiring significant business insights and discovering upcoming trends. The rationale behind it stems from studies indicating that 89% of companies believe customer experience to be crucial for gaining a competitive advantage. The UK’s leading provider of technology to amateur sports clubs will provide a first-of-its-kind platform to Finnish soccer’s governing body, enabling it to engage with its grassroots participants online and generate revenue. FINLAND TELECOMS, MOBILE, BROADBAND, AND DIGITAL MEDIA STATISTICS

Aug 2017 - Finland's telecom market is among the more progressive in Europe, with considerable emphasis by operators to test-bed technologies, particularly in the mobile and broadband sectors. These efforts have been supported by the regulator which has provided additional spectrum for telecom services and is preparing spectrum auctions in two pioneer bands to enable mobile operators to trial 5G services from 2018. As a result of these efforts the country enjoys among the highest broadband and mobile penetration rates in the region, with customers able to make use of the latest iterations of technologies. Finland has developed one of most advanced mobile markets in Europe, being among the first to launch 3G and LTE services and now in the forefront of 5G developments. The regulator in late 2016 auctioned spectrum in the 700MHz to extend the availability of LTE services nationally, while it also planned to make available to network operators spectrum in the 3.5GHz band by the end of 2018. This band is one of the pioneer bands which have been assigned for 5G across Europe. The Finnish vendor Nokia Networks is involved in trialling 5G technologies, mainly in cooperation with Elisa. Kieku makes some noise for though

This independent media startup has launched a new kind of audio listening service: a YouTube for podcasts. For Kieku, the tool for sculpting the horizon comes in the shape of a podcast content provider, which is tailored to listeners’ interests at the push of a button. “We are not focussed on ‘click this and laugh’ content, more so the stories that might stimulate thinking,” Fabritius explains. “Kieku makes it easier for people to find inspirational and brainy content. Media startup Kieku Labs is challenging the hegemony of existing text-based instant communication, such as Facebook and Twitter. Kieku is launching a brand new concept, the Minicast, which is about sharing audio sound bites in the moment as fun and interesting thoughts or moments occur. Whereas podcasts tend to be long, minicasts can be a maximum of 2 minutes long and are produced by a quick tap with your mobile phone. READ MORE
