    The basic idea behind the words “Big Data” is that everything we do is increasingly leaving a digital trace, which we can track, use and analyse. “We have access to a vast variety of Data but what really matters is our ability to make use of it", says Ben Shaw, who also highlights that it’s not only about business intelligence but also “finding questions you did not know you could ask.” So, what resources should a media company invest in a data strategy? Where do you start and how do you measure return on investment? The annual Small and Midsized Business meeting will address these issues.

    Media, innovation and sports : a major shift in sight (GAMI roundtable)

    Sports news is a major driver for media innovation, both in content and contribution and provides a solid platform for exploring new digital media and opportunities in immersive digital storytelling. The competitiveness attracts major sponsors and advertising and reaches large audience creating a need to open new channels. The large sports federations are seeking new alliances in order to find new business models, win negotiations of rights and access information. The panel will discuss the new framework and value chain facing the rules imposed by the digital platforms relating this to the Sports news initiative.

    Press Freedom roundtable

    When last in South Africa, 10 years ago, WAN-IFRA launched the Declaration of Table Mountain, a continent-wide campaign for governments to repeal criminal defamation and ‘insult laws’. It was driven by the conviction that Africa urgently needed a strong, free and independent press to act as a watchdog over public institutions. The annual press freedom roundtable invites media from across the continent to assess the progress since 2007 and determine whether we are any closer to achieving this goal, and if not, what needs to be done to get us there.

    Join us as we welcome participants to Durban and celebrate the award of the Golden Pen of Freedom, WAN-IFRA’s annual recognition of an outstanding action, in writing or deed, of an individual, a group or an institution to the cause of press freedom. Behind the names of the laureates lie stories of extraordinary personal courage and self-sacrifice, stories of jail, beatings, bombings, censorship, exile and murder. This is a moment for the world’s media to come together in solidarity and offer support to our laureate, and to insist that more be done to protect the essential freedoms that lie at the very core of our profession.     Addressing the theme of ‘Gender Representation in the Age of Social Media – How Can and Should the Media Address Gender Bias in News Reporting?’, panellists will discuss ongoing biases in reporting including double standards with regards to nudity, objectification, and stereotyping, and how media and advertisers play into these.

    Roadmaps for renewal

    Leaders from different regions of the world share strategies to ensure the sustainability of their news organisations.

    The oldest national daily in France has kept its head during the digital revolution. Founded in 1826, the Le Figaro Group now sees digital represent 35% of revenue and 60% of profit. Perhaps more startling is the fact that it is challenging giants Google and Facebook in France in terms of unique visitors. How has it managed this? Deputy CEO Jean-Luc Breysse will explain the group’s goals and road map.

    The next big thing, Part I

    Long term plans to change news publishers’ business models are under the microscope: including The New York Times 2020 project; Schibsted’s Next Gen of publishing products and Tony Haile’s search for industry answers via the new startup: Scroll. In part one of the session we will look at Haile’s project as Scroll is dedicated to “solving the problem of how to have sustainable, quality journalism on a free and open web.” The second speaker of this session, Torry Pedersen, will give an update on the status of Schibsted’s plan for the future.

    A news channel for the Netflix age

    Reuters TV app launched in 2015 as a response to the way in which video news consumption was evolving: “People were abandoning linear television for online video and online video consumption was becoming bifurcated between clips of video that are watched for seconds on Facebook, and long form entertainment that is binged (for hours) on Netflix” says Isaac Showman.

    VGTV’s team of roughly 70 staff members produces breaking news video, entertainment programmes, documentaries, and runs Norwegian newspaper VG’s Snapchat Discover channel. There is definitely a tone to VGTV!

    Pure players’ view on our future

    Al Huffington Post Maghreb launched in 2013 with separate editions in Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria, but unlike other regional editions, did so without local publishers.

    Ringier entered Africa in 2011 to capitalise on the market’s massive digital potential. Five years on and it has a foothold in Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Tanzania and Uganda with e-commerce, online classifieds and digital news platforms.

    Mats Nylund’s research team identified five areas where emerging blockchain technology and the interests of media companies intersect: intellectual property; micropayments; interaction based on smart contracts; individual marketing and customer integrity; content distribution platforms.

    A few years ago, when publishing companies began to understand that native advertising/branded content was a service they were best placed to offer to their advertising brands, some publishers started their own Content Studios. As in other areas of digital advertising, the objective was to combine creativity, measurement and a set of quality standards to a format gaining in popularity, but of course, still in the Wild West of novelty. Much has happened since, and Durban 2017 is a good time to evaluate progress.
