Chief strategic officer, Wunderman, South Africa

Astrid Ascar has 29 years’ experience in the media industry. She began her career as a radio and TV journalist and producer, and started working in the digital media and marketing space in 2004. She has worked for media brands including DStv, Carte Blanche, Summit TV (now Business Day TV), The Home Channel, CNBC Africa, SABC TV, SAfm, Highveld and in more recent years co-hosting an online radio business show on Hot919 fm. 

Astrid’s consulting work focus for the past 10 years has been digital and integrated marketing and communications strategies, content creation and production, key messaging and copywriting, website audits including UI and UX consulting, helping clients implement plans across owned, earned and paid digital platforms, and using data analytics to generate business insights. She also MCs, gives talks, and facilitates workshops and conferences, and offers training in digital media and marketing, key message crafting, media interview skills, presentation skills, and crisis comms. 

Since March this year Astrid has been fulfilling the role of Chief Strategy Officer for the Wunderman South Africa group.

Deputy Managing Editor, Folha de S.Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil

Leonardo is deputy managing editor at Folha de S.Paulo, the newspaper with the largest digital readership in Brazil. Founded 95 years ago, Folha reaches 40 million readers per month and is part of Grupo Folha, one of the largest media groups in Brazil, which includes UOL, the main internet portal. Folha was the first newspaper in Brazil to publish online content in real time and also the first to implement the paywall system on its website.   Leonardo is currently responsible for Folha's digital strategy. During his 19 years with the publication, he has also held a variety of management roles, including Home Page editor, Front Page editor, Technology editor, London correspondent and deputy editor for politics, international, culture and sports.

Dr. Daniel David, Mozambican, Chairman of Group SOICO – Sociedade Independente de Comunicação, Limited,  the unique media group in the country that brings the TV channel (“STV” in 2002), STV News that broadcast 24 hours a day for Mozambique  and abroad (STV Notícias 2014), Radio station (“SFM” in 2004) and daily Newspaper (“O País” in 2005) and O País Digital, a digital version that allows the paper to be read anywhere in the world.

He is CEO of  DHD – Consulting & Holding, Limited, a holding company with investments on media, IT, Real Estates, Banking and is the President of the Chamber of Commerce Mozambique-Portugal.

In 1998, was elected Vice-President of URTNA (Union of the Radios and Televisions of Africa) and he had special appearances in  United Nations Forum on TV and Radio – New York; Common Wealth Broadcast Convention – Cape Town; SABA – Southern African Broadcast Association.

He holds a degree in Administration and Management of Companies by Universidade Politécnica and attended the Management course at UNISA University in South Africa (Advanced Executive Programmer).

 

A broadcaster, designer and technologist; advisor to AlphaCode and Owner of Phantom Design

Simon is a broadcaster, designer and technologist who believes we're doing money wrong, and is trying to fix it. He hosts a weekly radio show on 5FM and previously directed product design at Curve (London), BitX (Singapore), and 22seven (Cape Town). He is an advisor to AlphaCode and a small group of clients through his company Phantom Design.

He'd rather be playing board games or surfing, but has been informed that the world is not going to change itself, and so spends his time attempting to move money out of the dark ages and the clutches of the evil forces that currently mismanage it. Simon actively invests in Blockchain technologies as founder of Inv.es, with a particular focus on Bitcoin and Ethereum.

He believes that most of the world’s problems can be solved with design and critical thinking. As Simon is fond of saying, "Smart is not something you are, it's something you do."

Andreij Horn was appointed CEO of 24.com on July 2016. Horn was until recently the Chief Information Officer at Media24. He started his career as a journalist at Volksblad in 1982. He subsequently pioneered the TopAd Shop, the country’s first online advertising booking platform, and CommerceZone, the central procurement platform used in Naspers’ South African companies.

Horn has a MA degree from the University of the Free State and obtained his MBA from the University of Cape Town in 1999, where he was honoured with the Bain Prize for ecommerce.

Cherilyn Ireton heads up the World Editors Forum, the global network for editors within WAN-IFRA. She is a seasoned newspaper professional, having spent more than 20 years on South African newspapers, as journalist and editorial manger on the country's leading titles, the Sunday Times and Business Day. She rose to be Chief Operating Officer of BDFM Publishers, the business media joint venture between Pearson, owners of the Financial Times, and Times Media in South Africa which published Business Day newspaper, the Financial Mail magazine and Summit TV. She relocated to the UK in 2005 and owned an ran a London-based media consultancy, Presslinks, which advised a variety of international organizations and foreign governments.

Digital Director EMEA, Quartz

Jamie Labate is the digital director for Quartz EMEA, with over 16 years of print and online media experience spanning the automotive, current affairs, technology and consumer markets.

He joined Dennis Publishing Ltd in 1998 as part of the initial team that launched the ad sales effort of The Week magazine. In 2004, as Advertisement Director, he left to head up the display effort at New Scientist across print and online platforms both in the UK and the US. He returned to Dennis as Online Trading Director in 2008 and spent 3 years running ad sales for the various 20 websites and growing digital magazine portfolio. The following 2 years resulted in his promotion to Deputy Managing Director of Advertising – having added managing the creative production team and licensing/syndication revenue efforts to his existing cross-platform remit.

Jamie spends his spare time with his family and harbours dreams of opening his own BBQ restaurant one day.

Born in Cape Town, South Africa, Lamb is a Strategy Consultant, now living in Miami, Florida, and specialising in media companies. "The goal of my consulting practice is to utilise the sophisticated strategic marketing principles and techniques, learned while doing my MBA at Harvard Business School, meshing them with a hands-on sales approach, to generate new revenue streams for publications and websites. Matej Lončarić

Matej Loncaric is Director of Video, Innovation projects, JoomBoos in 24sata, leading media company in Croatia, owned by Styria Group. Matej joined 24sata in late 2014 to transform cable news TV channel into modern and agile digital video department. Since then 24sata video started to grow exponentially; From two FTE's to 30 FTE's plus more than 40 contractors; from 500k video views per month to 100 M video views per month on all platforms from Facebook, Youtube and internal web player.  

Matej is  author and founder of today biggest YouTube network in Croatia – JoomBoos. Just one year since the launch, JoomBoos has won a particularly prestigious prize: the accolade of being among the most innovative media projects in the world at the INMA Global Media Awards in New York in 2017. – which is confirmation of the outstanding spirit of innovation. Video department has won more than 30 awards for it's drama series, musicals, talent shows from Digiday, Wan-ifra, INMA, Effie etc. Matej is today responsible for all innovation projects within 24sata.  

 

Publishing Consultant FT Strategies, WAN-IFRA Supervisory Board Member London, UK

Lisa MacLeod was Head of Digital at Tiso Blackstar Group, South Africa’s largest English-language publisher, and owner of 8 newspapers, 15 websites, music, film and radio businesses across the continent.  Her role was to lead digital strategy and innovation, and manage Tiso Blackstar’s online properties with 6-million unique browsers monthly on titles such as TimesLIVE, SowetanLIVE and BusinessLIVE, as well as implement sustainable digital monetisation streams.

Lisa was previously General Manager of Digital for Media24’s 24.com in Cape Town, and prior to that spent 12 years in London at the Financial Times, helping to drive their print to digital integration. She served as Head of Operations for FT.com, widely thought to be the most successful paid website in the media industry, and FT Managing Editor, overseeing staffing, strategic planning and budgets for the FT globally

From 2018-2020, Lisa served as the Vice-President of the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers and is currently a member of the Supervisory Board. She has been on the board of the World Editors Forum (WEF) for many years, and has taught and spoken at numerous international conferences and training events for WAN-IFRA , WEF and Women in News.

Mariam Mammen Mathew is the Chief executive Officer of Manorama Online, the new media group of Malayala Manorama. Before joining Malayala Manorama, Mathew was with Chase Manhattan Bank in the Management Consulting Center and then at Lab Morgan in J P Morgan, New York. She is a member of the governing council of the Internet and Mobile Association of India. Established in 1888, Malayala Manorama is India’s third largest circulated daily newspaper with more than 1.7 million copies. Malayala Manorama Group is one of the largest publishing companies in India with over 40 publications.

The group also runs Manorama News, a 24-hour news channel, which is the number one news channel in Kerala, and Radio Mango, FM stations in Kerala. Manoramaonline.com was launched in 1997 and then re-launched in 2002 as a comprehensive portal. With more than 500 million page views a month, it is one of the largest websites in the country.

Khadija Patel is the editor-in-chief of the Mail & Guardian and co-founder of the The Daily Vox. Khadija pushes words on street corners and was recently recognised as one of 25 individuals who are reshaping influence and engagement in the media. She has been published internationally by Al Jazeera, The GuardianQuartz and The Daily Maverick, among others, and is currently completing her first book. Since 2015, Khadija has been a research associate with WISER (Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of Witwatersrand) and previously published a community magazine that was distributed internationally. She is also a respected commentator on television and radio, both locally and internationally.

As Director of Europe and Africa for the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), Ralf is responsible for the organisation's numerous activities in the region. He has over a decade of experience in digital media working in varied roles. After completing a journalistic apprenticeship at a regional newspaper, Ralf began his career as an editor and editorial team leader for T-Online in Germany. He went on to hold leadership positions at Coop Press, ETH Zurich, Information Architects and Denon Allmedia in Switzerland. Ralf has a Masters Degree in Political Science and Rhetoric from the University of Tübingen.

Ben is a leading expert on digital media, and at WAN-IFRA he has the task of providing independent advice on digital strategy and organisational change. He will also lead the various WAN-IFRA initiatives to support the media industry in its transformation.

Previously, he was Shaw Media's Chief Digital Officer, and focused in driving digital revenue and audience for their digital products in the United States. Shaw was also the company’s CTO and previously IT Director. He oversaw the alignment of all technologies to Shaw’s audience and revenue growth strategies. He was also actively involved in optimizing Shaw Media's over 100 print and digital publication products and workflows. He is a licensed Apple iOS Developer and an Apple Certified Help Desk Specialist.
