Marcelo Rech is a journalist, president of the Brazilian Newspaper Association (ANJ), columnist, commentator and consultant.

He was Editorial and Institutional Vice President of Grupo RBS, a multimedia group with operations in southern Brazil. As a reporter, he worked in investigative reports and in war coverages, such as the wars in the Gulf and the Balkans and conflicts in Africa and Latin America.

For about 15 years he was managing editor of RBS newspapers and later director of journalism at RBS Group.

Marcelo was president of the World Editors Forum (WEF) between 2015 and 2017. He is currently a member of the executive committee of the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-Ifra) and of different boards and councils. Graduated in journalism, he attended the Executive Development Program at Fundação Dom Cabral and has specialization courses at the Media Management Center, linked to Kellogg, and media strategy at Harvard Business School.

He is a former journalist and presenter for PBS's NewsHour, EBN-Wall Street Journal TV, CNBC Europe. And he served as London correspondent of International Herald Tribune Television. His work has been nominated for an Emmy Award and his television programme, Media Report, was voted by viewers as Europe’s Best Business Programme. He continues to work as a live events and television host and presenter globally.

WAN-IFRA

Manfred Werfel was WAN-IFRA’s Deputy CEO until he retired on 1 June 2019. He was responsible for the Expo business of the association. He also managed the World Printers Forum, the print community within WAN-IFRA.

Since 1996 Werfel was part of WAN-IFRA’s management team. Over time he was responsible for Research, WAN-IFRA Reports, Expert Committees, Consulting, Training, Print Quality Projects, Events, Innovation Projects, World Press Trends, World News Media Congress, World Printers Forum and Expo. In 2012 he acted as Interim CEO.

Scott Armstrong is an Editor-in-Chief, Arabian Business Dubai, UAE. Prior to that, he was a Chief Executive Editor for Times of Oman (Print and Online titles) since 2014. A journalist with 26 years of experience, Scott has evolved from a traditional print journalist/editor to embrace digital delivery of content on multimedia platforms to maximise audience, global reach and engagement..  

For growing Oman's largest and most successful daily English language news channel in print and on digital, Scott has refocused its print edition on relevant content. Times of Oman is now widely acknowledged as the market leader for journalism in the Sultanate, and the most effective for advertising revenue generation.

Francesca Panetta is Executive editor, VR at the Guardian. She leads the Guardian’s virtual reality studio. 6x9: a virtual experience of solitary confinement was the Guardian’s first VR piece and won plaudits from sources as diverse as the Tribeca Film Festival, Robert De Niro and, most recently, The White House. The studio are now working on a slate of piece for release over the next year. Francesca’s work at the Guardian has focused on innovation and storytelling. She has commissioned and directed flagship pieces such as Firestorm, The Shirt on Your Back, the View from the Shard, The First World War.

Matthijs van de Peppel has been working in the newspaper industry for over ten years. Starting his career as a circulation marketer, he quickly developed as a online shop manager, online marketer, and project manager. Now, as the manager of the data intelligence and customer relationship management team at NRC Media, a quality Dutch news organisation, Matthijs is responsible for bringing data insights into decision making and amplifying the voice of the customer. Together with two coauthors he just published the book How to Succeed in The Relationship Economy.

As a vice president, Shawn DeWeese has over 20 years of experience and is instrumental in building Mather Economics’ new business relationships in the newspaper and magazine industries. He works closely with clients to develop and implement price optimization strategies, interpret results and maintain client engagements. Prior to joining Mather Economics, Shawn worked as the business development director for Qbase, where he built and marketed advanced analytic solutions for enterprises.

Shawn has held positions with Knight-Ridder, Harte-Hanks, E.W. Scripps and Cox Enterprises. He has leadership experience in a variety of business disciplines including advertising sales, media buying, circulation sales and marketing, business development, client relations and retention, operations and logistics. In 2006, Shawn presided over the Board of Trustees for the North American Division of the International Newspaper Marketing Association (INMA). He has also served as a board member and President of the Board of Trustees for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Greater Miami Valley for eight years. Shawn holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of the Cumberlands.

Don Ng has worked for a number of local newspapers including the Hong Kong Daily News, Wah Kiu Yat Po and the South China Morning Post before serving in the TVB's newsroom.  During his tenure in TVB, Don's assignments covered North Korea, East Timor, Afghanistan, London and Washington. After he left TVB, Don joined the China desk of the Cable News, and was assigned to Baghdad and Kuwait during the US invasion in Iraq. Don has received many international journalism awards, including the RTNDA Edward R. Murrow Award, New York Film Festival Gold Award, and the Human Rights Award. Don left Cable News in 2007 when he founded the EyePress, a photojournalism agency in Asia. In 2015, Don crowd-funded USD600,000 to found a non-profit news agency, the FactWire.

Torsten has been with Axel Springer for more than 30 years in various management roles of IT and technology. Torsten has been leading all the major projects in the newsroom at DIE WELT. Projects of implementing new technology and workflows for print, online and digital and the transformation process of changing the newsroom from a print-focus to a story-centric and digital-first focus.

Google News Lab Lead, APAC

Irene Jay Liu leads Google News Lab in the Asia-Pacific region. She was previously an investigative reporter and data editor at Reuters, where she was a 2017 Pulitzer finalist in the national reporting category. Earlier, she worked at the South China Morning Post and as a political reporter with the Times Union in Albany, New York.  She teaches data-driven investigative journalism at the University of Hong Kong and Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Charmaine has more than 20 years of experience in Marketing, Advertising and Business Development and has worked for the Philippines' top companies.  From FMCG where she handled flagship brands and was part of the team to set up business operations in Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, South China and Hongkong,  she moved to B2B heading the Marketing team for the Enterprise Group of one of the major telco companies in the Philippines.     Charmaine, a 2015 Awardee of the Golden Globe Tigers for Excellence in Marketing and Leadership  head of all the Inquirer platforms finding marketing synergies and providing marketing solutions for their clients.  The Inquirer Group has a reach of more than 20 Million and has transitioned from a single-medium platform to a multimedia organization on print, digital, social, broadcast, video-on-demand, outdoor advertising, printing and learning.  .   Recently, she spearheaded the Marketing campaign for the re-think of the Inquirer launching  "My Inquirer" and the tactical campaign- "Experience the most engaging Inquirer yet" putting into life the media quintet innovation of the Inquirer Group.

Biophysicist, University of New South Wales, Australia

Dr Matt Baker is a biophysicist in Sydney at the EMBL Australia Node for Single Molecule Science at the University of New South Wales, Australia. Matt completed his DPhil at Oxford University as a John Monash Scholar studying the bacterial flagellar motor that makes nearly all bacteria swim and now investigates the origins and self assembly of complex molecular machines.   Matt is a former Top 5 Under 40 Scientist in Residence at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), where he has produced and presented content for Radio National's Health Report, Science Show, Saturday Extra, and Earshot, and he is the regular science correspondent for ABC Nightlife broadcast throughout Australia on ABC Local Radio.    In 2016 Matt was embedded as Australia's inaugural Google Newslabs Fellow at Fairfax Media, home of the Sydney Morning Herald. There he successfully built a recommendation engine for similar content to increase reader on-site time, and analysed changes in Sydney's nightlife using transport data.

Mr. Bambang Harymurti serves as CEO of PT Tempo Inti Media Tbk since May 29, 2007. He also serves as Company’s Corporate Chief Editor. He was Company's Director from 1999 to 2006 and Vice President Director from 2006 to May 29, 2007.

He attended the Friendly Free Press Fellow internship course of Time magazine. In 1987, he was the Bureau Chief of Tempo Magazine in Bandung and became the Bureau Chief in Jakarta from 1987 to 1989. He became the Bureau Head of Tempo in Washington, USA, until 1994.

When Tempo was republished in 1998, he was appointed as Deputy Editor in Chief and a year later, he was appointed as the Chief Editor of Tempo Magazine. He was the Chief Editor of Koran Tempo in 2001. He was Editor of Harian Media Indonesia and Member of the Press Council.

HArymurti graduated from Institut Teknologi Bandung in 1984 and from J.F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, in 1991.

Director, Asia, WAN-IFRA APAC

Joon-Nie Lau

Joon-Nie leads the WAN-IFRA APAC team in Singapore. A lawyer by training, Joon-Nie spent over 15 years in broadcast television as a reporter, interactive producer, current affairs producer and news editor at Channel News Asia and its predecessors SBC News and TCS News. She has won several in-house awards for reporting, executive producing and best ‘live’ coverage and a Student Emmy for her Masters documentary project produced at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism while under a fellowship from MediaCorp. 

In her seven years teaching at Nanyang Technological University, Joon-Nie set up and headed Newsplex Asia, a US$700,000 convergent training newsroom and media lab in partnership with WAN-IFRA.

Besides being a Vice-President of the Singapore Press Club for over 16 years and co-founding the Hacks/Hackers Singapore chapter in 2015, Joon-Nie is also a regular speaker and trainer at conferences, workshops and industry panels both locally and abroad.

Daniel is deputy head of Group Strategy and Analytics at Singapore Press Holdings. He is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the group’s internal consulting, analytics and data science teams. His work involves strategy and analytics projects such as digital transformation, process optimisation and building a data-driven organisational culture. Daniel began his career as a business journalist before moving to corporate planning and business development roles. Daniel holds undergraduate degrees in computer science and management, and an MBA from the University of Cambridge.

Iain Martin is the Asia Editor for Storyful. Storyful has a team of six people in its Hong Kong bureau working to discover the best stories, photos and video from social media in Asia. Iain joined Storyful in 2012 after working as a financial journalist in London since 2007.

Jon Clarke is a Newspaper man. Commencing his Newspaper career at the age of 10 delivering a tri-weekly newspaper from his bicycle.  His father a Newspaper editor of note, his mother the accountant and his grandfather an advertising salesman, Jon’s career path was inevitable.

Jon has spent the last 25 years in the industry proper.  A Hand and Machine Compositor by trade in 1993 he joined the daily national broadsheet paper The Canberra Times as a typesetter. By 1996 Jon’s role included the coordination of new commercial clients following the installation of a new press the Geoman Doublewith.

Instrumental in the installation of CTP technology in 2000. In 2004 he was project lead on the installation of the Atex Cybergraphics Publishing system which finally linked advertising, editorial, finance and production onto one system, both projects were firsts for an Australian daily.

Jon was appointed Manager of Fairfax Media Print & Logistics Canberra in 2013, since then the site has completed a number of upgrades including the addition of Ultra Violet technology, upgraded publishing systems and last year the addition of a Super Panorama Gluing unit. All part of Fairfax’s transition of print.

Jon is a member of The NewsMediaWorks Environment Advisory Group and Chair of The Fairfax Foundation.

Group MD & CEO, Star Media Group Berhad, Malaysia

Chun Wai was appointed Group Managing Director & CEO of the Company on 20 November 2013. He has over 30 years of experience in  the newspaper industry.

Prior to his appointment as Group Managing Director & CEO of Star Media Group Berhad in November 2013, he was appointed the Group Chief Editor at the age of 46 in the year 2008, becoming the newspaper’s youngest top editor in its history. He was also the first Group Chief Editor to be appointed as an Executive Director in 2010.

Chun Wai holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, majoring in political science and history. He has attended financial and leadership development programmes organised by the International Centre for Leadership in Finance at several American universities including the University of Stanford and University of Southern California. He is an advisory panel member of the UKM Graduate School of Business, an adjunct professor at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) and a Fellow at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)

He won the prestigious Best Journalist Award for news features from the National Press Institute for his investigative article on Malaysian terrorists and their arms training in Afghanistan in 2003.

Chun Wai was also awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for Leadership in Media Industry by the World Chinese Economic Forum in Chongqing, China in 2014.

He is the first Malaysian to be elected to the board of the Paris-based World Editors Forum. He is also a supervisory counsel of Bernama,  the national news agency and a member of the Governance Council of the National Innovation Agency in the Prime Minister’s Department. He was also a chairman of the Bangkok-based Asia News Network, an alliance of 21 media groups in Asian cities. 

In addition to the above, Chun Wai is a board member of the Center for Mobile Studies (CMS) at the Xiamen University Malaysia. He is also an Honorary Advisor (2016-2019) of the Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC).

Chun Wai writes a weekly column in The Sunday Star called “on the Beat” which focuses on political and religious moderation.

He is a strong believer who advocates commonalities and positive values.

Inam joined Google in February 2011, and is currently Head of Sales, South East Asia at Google Cloud.  He is responsible for growing market share and revenue across Google Cloud solutions for Enterprise and Government customers.

Prior to joining Google in February 2011, Inam spent seventeen years working across multiple diverse geographic markets and industries; Telecommunications - SingTel Optus in Australia; Banking & Finance - Citibank in Singapore, HSBC in Hong Kong; and Retail - Walmart in USA. In that time, Inam held a variety of roles encompassing Sales, Business Development, Product Marketing, Product Management, General Management, Corporate Strategy, and Business Manager to Chief Operating Officer.

Inam graduated with a Masters Business Administration (MBA) degree from the Australian Graduate School of Management in Sydney, Australia; and also graduated with a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Business Management and Finance from the Krannert School of Management at Purdue University, Indiana, U.S.A.

Director, CrowdTangle Asia Pacific

Asha Phillips leads partnerships for CrowdTangle in Asia Pacific and India, based in Singapore. CrowdTangle was acquired by Facebook in late 2016 and is a leading social analytics and discovery platform used by hundreds of newsrooms around the world. Asha has spent the past decade working in news and media throughout Asia – she started her career in broadcast news in Australia before becoming one of the pioneering editors at Storyful, the first global social media news wire, which was acquired by News Corporation in 2014.

CEO, The New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Bhd

Datuk Abdul Jalil Abdul Hamid was appointed as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of The New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Berhad effective March 2017.

Jalil was the Group Managing Editor of NSTP since October 2011. At the NSTP, he is in charge of the overall content policy and management of the print division of the Media Prima group. He runs the editorial department of the NSTP group and oversees the print and digital content of the three newspapers of the group.  

Prior to this, he set up and headed the National Communications Team, a special unit under the Prime Minister’s Office. The Unit was set up to help spearhead strategic communications advice and planning for the government.

General Manager, tonton, Media Prima Berhad

Loh Ben Jern, better known as Ben or @benjern on the radio and social space has a voice which may sound familiar playing hits to millions of passengers on Malaysia Airlines coupled with over 9 years as a radio jock on one of Malaysia's top English radio stations - Fly FM. 

As a self-professed geek, Ben's consulting & technology background has brought him beyond just a voice in radio but also in the development of digital marketing solutions and strategies in the radio broadcasting industry as Media Prima Radio Network's Digital Technologist. 

Today, Ben manages tonton - Malaysia's 1st and largest homegrown OTT service with over 6.5 million users and growing at an intense pace of 18,000 weekly.

Jodi Rudoren has been appointed Editorial Director of NYT Global in February 2017. Prior to this position, she was a deputy on the NYT's International Desk. She is also a veteran national and metro correspondent and editor. 

In her present position, Jodi oversees the NYT's efforts to expand coverage that appeals to non-American readers. She collaborates with product and the news desk to make sure the NYT's most powerful and immersive journalism reaches the right audiences.

Jodi is a core part of the NYT's newsroom leadership team and one of the authors of the NYT's recent internal 2020 Report, Journalism that Stand Aparts.

Strategic Partnerships, Facebook

Ken Teh leads news and publisher partnerships for Facebook in Asia Pacific, based in Singapore. Ken has spent 15 years in the news and TV business and took on various editorial and business roles at The Associated Press, CNN and MediaCorp. As a foreign correspondent he spent time embedded with the US Marines in Afghanistan and reported from North Korea during Pyongyang’s failed rocket launch. Ken was also anexecutive editor at Channel NewsAsia where he led efforts to drive digital innovation in the newsroom.

Chief Operating Officer, JoongAng Ilbo, South Korea

Changhee PARK has been the COO at JoongAng Ilbo since 2014. He has been in charge of the Corporate Strategy Team at JoongAng Media Network (JMnet) which is the holding company of the JoongAng Media Group. The JMnet is the largest media group in Korea managing 25 subsidiaries such as JTBC (Broadcasting Network), J Contentree (Entertainment Company), etc. JoongAng Ilbo is one of the major newspaper companies with over 1.3m circulation.
Prior to taking his position as the CFO, Park was in charge of M&A and business development regarding new business of the group. He led the acquisition of the sports newspaper company ‘Ilgan Sports’, a public corporation, and the expansion of its business portfolio into cable TV channels, multiplex theaters, and magazine business over the following four years. After changing its name to J Contentree, the company has become an entertainment company renowned for its diverse portfolio.
Park has started his career at JoongAng Ilbo as a reporter in 1992. He mainly worked as a business journalist prior to 2000 when he went to the States for an MBA degree at Wharton School. When Park joined the Corporate Strategy Team at JoongAng Ilbo, the very first business project he participated was about launching the Forbes in Korea.  The first CEO of the Forbes Korea at that time, Sohn, Byung-soo, and Park visited the Headquarter to meet with Mr. Steve Forbes and other key persons.

Chief Digital Officer, JoongAng Ilbo, South Korea

Sirgoo Lee is Chief Digital Officer at JoongAng Ilbo, South Korea’s second largest daily newspaper and leading multimedia news publisher. Prior to his present position, Sirgoo was the Co-CEO of Kakao Corp, the company behind Korea’s highly popular instant messaging app, kakaoTalk. Sirgoo also held various executive positions at NHN Corporation and at IBM in the USA and in APAC.

Editor in Chief, Malaysiakini

Steven Gan is the  co-founder and editor in chief of the political news website Malaysiakini, Malaysia's "first and only" independent news source. In 2000, he was awarded the International Press Freedom Award of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).

Gan received a degree in political economy from an Australian university in 1989. He began his journalistic career in print, as a freelancer for a Hong Kong-based newspaper. In 1991, he covered the Gulf War from Baghdad. In 1994, he returned to Malaysia, where he became a reporter for the new Malaysian daily The Sun. There he struggled against both government regulation and the self-censorship of The Sun's editors.

Though Malaysian law had provided for strict government controls on print media since 1984, the Malaysia Multimedia Super Corridor, an initiative to encourage technological development in Malaysia, was launched in 1995. A founding principle of the project was that government censorship of the Internet would not be permitted. Seeing a loophole, Gan and colleague Premesh Chandran decided to found an online news resource that would be free of the controls placed on print media. The pair founded Malaysiakini.com in November 1999.

Malaysiakini is now published in four languages – English, Malay, Chinese and Tamil – reaching over 2.5 million readers every month with independent coverage of political and current affairs.

Anandan Thangasamy joined Star Media Group in year 2000 as Maintenance Engineer. Anandan holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA (Strategic Management) from University of Technology, Malaysia.

His area of expertise in newspaper production process includes technical and operational aspects of modern mailroom. Possessing a solid track record by succeeds numerous technical projects and team development initiatives including the organizational transformation from traditional to modernized mailroom.

Anandan currently plays hybrid roles and has broad experience embracing product innovation, implementation of breakthrough creative advertising campaigns; value added services and strategic operations management.
