Managing Director - Print Production, The Globe and Mail, Canada

Sally Pirri brings extensive publishing experience to the role of Managing Director, Print Production at The Globe and Mail. Since joining The Globe and Mail, Pirri has held various operational roles in both Circulation and Advertising before moving into production management for newspapers and magazines. In 2002, Pirri was promoted to Director, Production, responsible for all Globe and Mail printed products. And later in 2017 to Managing Director, Print Production. In her tenure at The Globe and Mail, she has seen the newspaper through several redesigns, including the most ambitious redesign in the paper’s publishing history in 2010.

In her current role, Pirri oversees the production and printing of The Globe and Mail newspaper, Report on Business Magazine and Style Advisor Magazine, as well as building and maintaining relationships with the print partners across Canada, TC • Transcontinental Printing and Glacier Media. The Globe and Mail is printed in five print sites across Canada, and printed on industry leading hybrid printing presses.

In 2012 Pirri was one of only seven women, worldwide, to win the coveted Women of Distinction Award from OuputLinks Communications Group (Houston, Texas).

Pirri is actively involved with the World Association of Newspaper and News Publishers, WAN-IFRA, sharing her knowledge and successes with industry leaders and publishers, and currently sits on the World Printers Forum Board.

She also sits on the Ladies First Hockey Foundation Board. LFHF specifically supports the players of the Canadian National/Olympic Women’s Hockey, and supports the National Program’s development towards the overall sport of Canadian Women’s hockey. The Foundation is 100% volunteer governed.

Production Director, Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung, Germany

Mr. Ullman studied Druck und Medientechnik at Fachhochschule in Munich from October 2002 until March 2007. He is in charge of all production for the Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung. His responsibilities cover: customer liaison, pre-press, press, post press, strategic foresight for the production as well as future investments. From 2015 Mr. Ullman has been the Managing director for Presse Druck and Verlags – GmbH as well as being the Production director of the Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung.

Technical Director, Athesis, Italy

Technical Director in Athesis, a publishing house located in Verona, north-east of Italy, that publishes three local newspapers (L’Arena in Verona county, Il Giornale di Vicenza in Vicenza county, Bresciaoggi in Brescia county) and owns two local TV (TeleArena in Verona and TeleMantova in Mantova), a Radio (RadioVerona in Verona) and the book publishing house Neri Pozza.

Managing Director, Tamedia, Switzerland

Andreas Schaffner (CH/F/1963) is Co-Managing Director of the Paid Media division since January 2020. In this function, he is also in charge of the three printing centres in Bern, Lausanne and Zurich, as well as the publishing logistics division. Since the end of 2009 he has been employed by Tamedia AG as responsible of the Publishing Services division. Andreas Schaffner gained professional and management experience in the graphic arts industry before studying engineering at the Ecole Suisse d'Ingénieur des Industries Graphiques in Lausanne. He joined Ringier in 1995 as project manager. At Ringier AG, Andreas Schaffner headed various service and printing divisions and became Managing Director of Ringier Print in Adligenswil (Switzerland) in 2005. From 2007 to 2009, Andreas Schaffner, who completed a part-time Executive MBA degree, was a member of the management of Ringier Switzerland.

Group Paper Director, DMG-Media, London

Dr. Rick Stunt is the Group Paper Director for DMG-Media in London. He holds a Phd in Chemical Physics. Dr. Stunt is the former chairman of the World Printers Forum board as well as being on the board of WAN-IFRA. He is the chair of the N.I.M.C (Newspaper Industry Raw Materials Committee) in the UK, as well as chairing the Paper and Environmental Working Group for N.M.E. (News Media Europe) and is an Executive Director on the Board of 2-Sides. Dr. Stunt also served on the Board of WAN-IFRA for several years.

General Manager, Production, News Corp., Australia

After graduating from Chemical Engineering at Sydney University, Marcus commenced his career in metallurgy in Australia and the UK.  After seven years in this field, he transitioned to FMCG with Colgate Palmolive, holding a number of Senior Leadership roles across Australia and New Zealand. Currently Marcus is the Executive General Manager of Production, Logistics and Property at News Corp Australia.  With more than 20 years in Operational leadership Marcus has a wealth of knowledge on driving cultural change and delivering sustained improved operational outcomes.

Production Director, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Germany

Andreas studied Printing and Media Technology at Munich University of Applied Sciences, Germany. After graduation, he joined Frankfurter Societäts-Druckerei GmbH 1997 as a trainee and later promoted as aAssociate in 1999. In 2001, Andreas moved to Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung GmbH and performed various management tasks within the production department. Currently he heads the entire production department including planning, ad production and newspaper/magazine production. Starting in 2020, he also took over as Head of Strategic Purchasing.

Snehasis Roy is an MBA from Narsee Monjee Institute of Management and B.S with Honours (Printing Management & Sciences) from Rochester Institute of Technology, USA. Snehasis has over 28 years of Leadership experience spread over organisations like Times Warner inc., Dainik Bhaskar, ABP Pvt Ltd & Times of India Group (BCCL).

He is currently leading the Times group production as Technical Director. He takes care of Press and Prepress operations, and infra upgradations. Apart from this, currently, he is Chairman for the World Printers Forum, South Asia Committee.

Snehasis is an accomplished technocrat with acclaimed achievement in production & technology. He has led projects that considered a benchmark in Newspaper plant design and maintenance in South Asia. In addition, under his guidance, his team has won several recognitions. The latest one to mention is the WAN-IFRA Print Innovation Awards 2019. Under the Product Innovation category, BCCL won both Gold & Silver awards.”

Global Product Manager, Cascade Corporation

Mike Elmore joined Cascade Corporation in June of 2016 where he assumed the position of Global Product Manager. In this role at Cascade he is responsible for paper roll clamps, damage reduction products, rotating products and Sensor Forks technologies. Prior to joining Cascade, he was the Global Marketing Manager for ESCO Corporation where he was responsible for the development and communication of global market information and sales collateral for divisional markets and products. Previous to ESCO he was the Marketing Manager for KapStone Paper and Packaging Corporation (formerly Longview Fibre Paper and Packaging) where he was responsible for the direction, design and implementation of comprehensive product and segment marketing plans across multiple manufacturing locations. He has extensive product management, product development, marketing and sales experience, a significant portion of which is associated with the pulp and paper industry.

CEO, Vedacon

Ms. Zink is born 1977 in Gotha, worked after the successful completion of her studies of interior architecture from 2001 at Atisreal Proplan GmbH. As project and team leader, she managed a large number of projects and planning processes during this time. As a co-founder of Vedacon in 2008, Kathleen Zink has been the managing partner of Vedacon. In her more than 19 years of professional career, she was responsible for the supervision of more than 700 projects nationwide.

Elias Merklinghaus is currently Business Unit Manager of Competence Center (head of maintenance planning, procurement, materials management, Quality Lab) at Suddeutsche Zeitung. He is specialized in process and project management. He studied print and media technology in Germany and the USA.

Nina Hauk started working for Vedacon GmbH in 2011 and currently she is a project manager. She is educated as an engineer in interior architecture. Main focus in her design is on: workspace concepts, interior design, project planning and control, change management and user management.

Martin Gercke is the vice president technical sales at Stora Enso. He is responsible for the global technical customer service team in the Paper Division of Stora Enso since 2012. Managing Director, Pressens fællesinkob

Thomas Isaksen is the CEO of the Den Danske Presses Faellesindkøbs-Forening, Procurement Association of the Danish Press, Denmark. The Procurement Association, known by the acronym DDPFF, is a non-profit company. It handles a volume of about 65,000 tonnes of newsprint a year, and covers nearly 100% of the Danish market. Thomas Isaksen is a board member of the WAN-IFRA World Printers Forum. He holds a Master’s Degree in Economics, an MBA and a Master’s Degree in Negotiation.

“Martin Schorn is a paper industry professional with more than 20 years technical and Sales knowledge. At UPM, Martin has worked in different roles in Technical Sales and Marketing, as well as Sales in Germany and in the UK. In his current role as Director of Technical Customer Service, News & Retail at UPM Communication Papers, he leads a European team of technical service experts and is responsible for developing and implementing technical service strategy for the News & Retail strategic business unit. Martin Schorn has been an active member of the IFRA Newsprint and Newsink Committee and the WAN-Ifra World Printers Forum Working Group respectively for many years and holds a Masters Degree in in Wood Science and Technology.”

Managing Director, Two Sides UK

Jonathan is Managing Director for the Two Sides campaign, which promotes the sustainability of print and paper. With 30 years experience in this sector, other roles included Head of Environment for PaperlinX merchants, and leading a successful government programme to increase consumption of recycled paper.
Erik Ohls worked for several years for UPM before his retirement. He graduated from Helsinki Technical University, Paper Technology. Worked in the Finnish paper industry in Finland and abroad. He was mostly involved in technical issues of customer services and global technical marketing. Activities includes memberships in customer organisations in North America and Europe.

Senior Vice President - Newsprint and Retail Customers, UPM, Finland

Ms Ahola is the Senior Vice President, Newsprint and Retail Customers and WAN IFRA Printers’ Forum Board member. Anu Ahola joined UPM in 2007 being responsible for strategy creation and implementation processes and Paper Business Group's strategy development. Prior to joining UPM she worked for Nokia and Pöyry.  Anu Ahola has a Master's degree in Technology from Helsinki University of Technology, and MBA from Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration.

Olivier Derville has extensive professional experience in the paper and press industry. After completing his higher education (Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne / Insead), Olivier began his professional career with the Le Figaro group in advertising (1989/1996). He then joined the Norwegian paper group Norske Skog (1997/2011) where he successively held the positions of Sales Director France then Sales Director Europe of the Norske Skog Golbey division. Since 2012 at Gramméo-SPPP, Olivier initially took charge of the Paper Purchasing Department. His responsibilities were then extended to the Operations Department. He was appointed Deputy Chief Operating Officer in March 2020. Olivier is 56 years old and lives in Paris. He is married and has two children.

After having qualified as a Chartered Accountant, Styli is now fully reformed and passionate about the media business following a stint in the London banking scene. He’s subsequently helped establish and develop various media start-ups and projects, including Daily Maverick and The Gathering, the country’s premier media and politics conference. His official role at Daily Maverick is that of publisher and CEO which translates into “he who fights fires – sometimes successfully but always only after morning coffee.”

Ltd, having gained a wealth of Production experience in Pre-press, Press and Post Press operations. With print quality top of his agenda, Interpress have been National Newspaper Printer of the Year in Ireland for the past 7yrs in a row which in turn has lead to an overflowing order book!

Tobias Köngeter has been working in the printing and media industry for 14 years. Together with his wife Deborah Köngeter, he founded the company WirbelWild a few years ago with the aim of revolutionizing design processes and printing products. At the Druck&Medien-Awards 2019, they were counted among the three most innovative companies of the year with their self developed software "ManyPrint Solutions".

Josef Schiessl

Mr. Josef Schiessl studied at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich with a degree in printing and media as a graduate engineer. Since then, he has accumulated over 36 years of experience in the printing industry, starting as an operational project manager, Controller and predominantly in management.

Mr. Schiessl has been the managing director of the printing company of the Süddeutsche Zeitung for 5 years. He focuses on topics such as quality, increased efficiency in industrial production and developing new business areas as services, as well as new technologies such as 3D printing.

CEO and Founder, Community Impact Newspaper, USA

After spending the beginning of his career in the newspaper business at the Houston Chronicle and the Austin Business Journal, John Garrett launched the first edition of Community Impact Newspaper in 2005 with from the game room of their home with his wife Jennifer and three full-time employees covering the Round Rock and Pflugerville edition near Austin, Texas. Today, Community Impact Newspaper has more than 180 employees and 31 hyperlocal editions of the newspaper across Texas, Arizona, and Tennessee and is delivered monthly to more than 2.5 million homes. Additionally, the Garretts opened up a state-of-the-art printing facility in 2016. John has been honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the nonprofit RecognizeGood for ethics in business and community and named the Best Small Business CEO from the Austin Business Journal.

Mr Jónsson joined Iceland Post in June 2019. He has extensive management and operations experience in both Iceland and overseas. Mr Jónsson was area manager for Össur in Asia, with offices in Hong Kong; the Managing Director & CEO of Iceland Express and later the Vice Managing Director & CEO of WOW air. He lived and worked for a number of years in Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary, where he was the Managing Director & CEO of Infopress Group, one of the largest printers in Eastern Europe. In addition, Mr Jónsson has been involved in numerous projects involving restructuring and transformation together with running his own business and working as a professional musician. Vijaykumar S Bichakal is graduate engineer in Electronics from Pune University and has over 28 years of experience in prepress at the Times of India Group. He believes that technologies of AI, ML and RPA present exciting opportunities to transform the workflows to benefit business in this VUCA environment. Workflows of the future must be light, accessible, scalable, reachable from anywhere any time. He is currently working in Prepress as DGM. Amol Pitale is a post graduate Diploma in Business Administration (PGDBA) from Mumbai University with bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. Amol has over 12 years of experience with Print Application Technologies. He had been working with Editorial Print Application since 2007 wherein he joined BCCL- Times Group and later moved to TATA Consultancy Limited, where he worked for US based publication house “Tribune Publishing”. Since last 2 years he has joined again the Times of India Group (BCCL). He is currently working with BCCL Prepress wherein his major role contributes to the Application Technology and support to all English and Regional print publications. He has been a key team member in Implementation of Editorial workflows in BCCL. He has also been the team member for lead projects which included the WAN-IFRA Print Innovation and AMA.

Stefanie Eichiner is Manager Sustainability at UPM Communication Papers. She loves paper – and the forest. With her master’s degree in forest science, she has planted, cared for and harvested trees in the Bavarian Forest. With her Ph.D. in natural resource management, she has studied and taught in sustainable natural resource use in Germany, Indonesia and the United States. For 7 years she has now been a manager in sustainability at UPM Communication Papers.

Anna Drougge is the head of strategic procurement with Bonnier News. She as worked as a 

procurement executive in the Media Services and Industrial Production. Anna joined the Bonnier Group in 2005 and headed strategic sourcing for production and services. Former Manager Capital Procurement in Pfizer Inc and Purchasing Manager in the Automobile Industry (Trelleborg Group). Office in Stockholm. 



Senior Director of Manufacturing, TC Transcontinental, Ontario

Gary is the Senior Director of Manufacturing at TC Transcontinental. He joined the organisation in March 2007 as Site Leader, Transcontinental Newspaper Group.  His primary responsibility was to manage the San Francisco project.  He oversaw the construction, installation, hiring, training and the successful launch of the Fremont, California facility. In January 2011, he was promoted to Senior Director, Manufacturing Operations for the Newspaper Group.  He moved to Canada and managed The Globe and Mail press installation project across Canada.  Once completed, Gary took on the General Manager role at the new Vaughan facility.  In 2016, Gary assisted in bringing another daily newspaper, the Toronto Star into the Vaughan plant operation. Again, in 2018, Gary oversaw the addition of another daily, the Hamilton Spectator. In 2020, Gary was promoted to Senior Director Manufacturing of the Print Sector.  Gary now assists the manufacturing operation of all the printing business units from Halifax to Vancouver.  He’s also responsible for large scale project work and establishing an annual capital plan.

 

Operations Manager, TC Transcontinental

Dave Toth has over 25 years of Printing Industry experience in a multitude of rolesDave Toth has over 25 years of Printing Industry experience in a multitude of roles. He started as a feeder on a printing press, eventually working his way through the ranks on the press, on inserting equipment and into prepress. In 2002, Toth joined the Management Team at Transcontinental and was later promoted to Operations Manager, responsible for both newspaper and retail printing at Transcontinental’s flagship print plant located just north of Toronto. In his tenure at Transcontinental, he has helped to lead several press and post press installations while working closely with newspaper publishers as they transitioned to contract printing and through several product redesigns.

Like most Gen Xers, Vito’s young employment journey began as a newspaper carrier managing multiple routes, for multiple publications while going to school. What originally started as a part time job eventually led him to a long, fulfilling career years later at The Globe and Mail. Since joining The Globe, Vito has worked in Customer Service, Marketing, Advertising and Operations where he currently sits as Manager, National Logistics and Distribution.
