PANEL DISCUSSION · CULTURE CHANGE: KEY TO MEDIA TRANSFORMATION

    Lugar:
Official timetable based on Mexico City business hours - ONLINE

    10:30 AM CDMX/11:30 BOGOTÁ · 1:30 PM BUENOS AIRES/ SAO PAULO · 5.30 PM MADRID

Our industry has gone through a massive transformation in recent years, adapting business models and searching for new talent and new skills that needed to be introduced into the company, but the most difficult challenge is the change of culture, and how this can be achieved.

The 19th* was born with the DNA of diversity and a culture of change, offering, not only free journalism that reimagines politics and political coverage through a gender lens, but also an open digital platform that encourages dialogue and community building, and a newsroom that reflects the racial and socio-economic diversity of American women and is dedicated to communicating gender issues with empathy.

In 2016, RBS initiated a group-wide transformation by consolidating its core businesses, television, radio and newspapers, selling five of its eight newspapers and changing most of its leadership. In addition to a change in the business model, the new reality of the digital transformation brought further changes to the commercial and operational side of all media outlets. We discussed how RBS used "design thinking" to facilitate the transformation and implement the change.

Accelerating Digital Transformation has been top of mind in 2020. This has been a year of great challenges, with all of us looking for new ways to work, study, buy, connect and stay closer to one another, even when we can’t be physically together. As a result, when COVID-19 hit in early 2020, organizations from all around needed to rethink and accelerate their processes towards digital transformation. In this session, we will talk about how Facebook is collaborating with newsrooms in LATAM to accelerate their digital transformation, followed by an insightful conversation led by Tim Griggs where publishers that have participated on Facebook Accelerator program will share learnings and how they are preparing for 2021.

    3:00 PM CDMX/4:00 PM BOGOTÁ   ·  6:00 PM BUENOS AIRES/ SAO PAULO  ·  10:00 PM MADRID

Media houses today have to be able to adapt to the fast-paced digital world and the rising complexity of the tech tools at hand. At the same time, they cannot lose sight of the growing needs of the audience, their mission, their legacy, and their commercial objectives.

Integrating all of these into a coherent framework to create a comprehensive strategy for the organization, embracing a "product-centered" mindset, is what makes product managers essential to every successful digital strategy.

In this session, we will discuss with North and Latin American cases how they have successfully adopted this approach, the challenges involved and the benefits they are gaining from it.

The coronavirus pandemic has dramatically altered and disrupted our lives. As a society, and as the news media industry, in particular, we are experiencing radical, accelerated transformation. A new model and paradigm, still-unnamed, are emerging.

In a short time, we have had to face the challenges of remote working, a dramatic downfall in ad spending, layoffs, a timid return of trust in legacy media, and the needs-driven evolution of reader revenue models.

This fireside chat between news commentator and former Editor of the Guardian, Alan Rusbridger and the Editor of El Pais, Javier Moreno, will unpack the forces at play during this time of uncertainty and upheaval.  What’s next for journalism?

Through relief funds and different support programs, platforms have been some of the few institutions and organizations that have effectively helped media outlets in Latin America during a historically challenging time for news companies. However, calls for regulation around copyright and remuneration for use of content has also been one of this year’s recurring industry demands in different parts of the world. Platforms have launched products that pay publishers for their content, but in a way that leaves a part of the industry unsatisfied. How will these developments play out in 2021?

LE PARISIEN'S ACCELERATED GROWTH THROUGH PREMIUM CONTENT

    9:00 AM CDMX/10:00 AM BOGOTA  ·  12:00 PM BUENOS AIRES/ SAO PAULO  ·  4:00 PM MADRID

Le Parisien, is a local newspaper that covers local news about Paris metropolitan area as well as world news, with a daily circulation of 300,000 copies. In the past year, the newspaper has seen both, its number of digital subscribers and its digital revenues doubled thanks to an ongoing effort to produce more premium content exclusively for subscribers.

Le Parisien relied on a metered payment wall, and over time, started adding premium articles, which are only available to subscribers, making their site a hybrid between metered and premium content. Earlier this year, Le Parisien began to steadily increase the number of premium articles they published from 10 to 50 per day. Today, 90 percent of their new subscribers come through the premium articles

DECODING THE SUBSCRIPTION ENIGMA: TARGETING YOUNG AUDIENCES AND WOMEN

This Norwegian group found the pandemic useful in re-evaluating its content and subscription strategy. During the first weeks of the pandemic they experienced, like everyone else in the industry, an upswing, but after weeks of 24/7 coverage on the pandemic, the subscriber fatigue began to take a toll on their subscriber base. The previous year they ended with very promising figures due to the fact that they had started to target two specific demographic groups such as young people and women, with great success. Their passion to unravel what is behind each story and why some stories convert better than others, has helped them to better understand what makes the content relevant to their target audience: better representation of women and younger people in the stories seems to have a direct correlation with the increase in subscriptions among those same demographic groups.
