Jennifer Bertetto began as a stringer for the sports department at the Valley News Dispatch, while still in high school. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh, she became a sales rep for the Tribune-Review’s burgeoning expansion into the Pittsburgh market in 1997. Jennifer’s dedication took her upward — from sales manager to majors accounts director, then advertising director, then Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. In 2015, she became President and CEO of Trib Total Media. Yet, with every goal she completes, Jennifer continues to look ahead — and in 2016, she helped launch 535media.

As a board member for the News Media Alliance, representing over 2,000 news organizations and their multiplatform businesses around the world, Jennifer has her finger on the pulse of the digital evolution of the news industry — from finding ways clients can gain online revenue to developing alternative revenue streams and engaging audiences.

Alexandra Borchardt a senior journalist, keynote speaker, media consultant and Senior Research Associate at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford. As a Director of Leadership Programmes at the Institute until July 2019 she developed and led on the seminar series “Oxford Perspectives”, targeting senior journalists, editors and media managers. Prior to this, she was managing editor of Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ), Germany’s leading quality daily.

Alexandra’s main focus is digital transformation and how it impacts the media, democracy, the workplace and human behaviour. She teaches “Leadership and Strategy in the 21st Century” at TU Munich, gives lectures and talks on digitisation and the media and publishes opinion pieces with Project SyndicateNewsMavens and theEuropean Journalism Observatory. She is the author of Mensch 4.0 – Frei bleiben in einer digitalen Welt (Freedom in a digital world), Guetersloher Verlagshaus (Random House), 2018. She serves as vice chair of the Council of Europe Committee of Experts on Quality Journalism in the Digital Age.

At SZ she held several functions in the politics and business sections. She was also founding editor of Süddeutsche’s ‘Plan W’, an award winning quarterly magazine for women and business. In her reporting she has focused on internet and democracy and the future of work. In 2015 she published Das Internet zwischen Diktatur und Anarchie: Zehn Thesen zur Demokratisierung der digitalen Welt (The Internet between Dictatorship and Anarchy: Ten Assertions about Democracy in the Digital World), Süddeutsche Zeitung Edition Streitschrift. Before joining SZ she worked for Financial Times Deutschland and Deutsche Presse-Agentur.

Alexandra holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Tulane University, New Orleans (1994), and in 2013 completed a Programme for Management Development at IESE Business School, Barcelona.

Catarina Carvalho was former Executive Editor at Diário de Notícias, the oldest national daily, part of Global Media Group, Portugal. She has been responsible for the digital transition of the newspaper – now only on paper on Saturdays. She has been a journalist since she was 19, working with many national newspapers and magazines – Diário de Notícias, Visão, Sábado, Expresso – covering justice, social affairs, and immigration beats, before becoming a reporter at large and holding leading newsroom positions. She is also a member of the Online News Association and part of the editorial board of Nonio – the Portuguese media publishers single sign-on.

Digital Editor, Corriere della Sera, Italy

Davide Casati is Digital Editor at Corriere della Sera, whose main work focuses on maximizing reader engagement and increase subcriptions. He graduated from the Columbia School of Journalism in New York City with a Business Journalism degree.

Founded in 1876, the Corriere della Sera is Italy’s most widely-read daily newspaper and an international reference point and is seen as Italy’s most authoritative daily, given the breadth, depth and quality of the information it provides. Through its website, digital editions, magazines, vertical channels, local publications and presence on social networks, the Corriere della Sera provides a complete and continually evolving information.

News Ecosystem Lead, Google 

Megan is the News Ecosystem Lead at Google where she focuses on building tools for journalists and publishers, local news, and evolving news business models.

She previously spent over a decade in journalism. As the Director of Digital Operations at The Washington Post, she was responsible for elevating digital performance across the newsroom and partnering with engineering and business teams. Prior to that role, she was the director of digital products at Politico where she focused on digital development, like the launch of Politico Magazine, and oversaw the social media and election results teams. Before that, she was the online Washington editor at USA TODAY where she oversaw election results, social media, and coordinated and wrote the first draft of the Osama bin Laden raid.

Megan graduated from the University of Southern California with a bachelor's degree in print journalism and a minor in East Asian Studies. She also holds a M.S. and a M.A. from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, with a specialty in arts and culture.

Head of  la Repubblica & Magazine Digital BU, GEDI Gruppo Editoriale, Italy

Filippo Davanzo head of “la Repubblica and Magazines” Digital Business Unit at GEDI Digital - the Italian company who ensures the digital development for all the titles of GEDI Group including la Repubblica, the leading news site in Italy. More than 20 years experience in digital media, has contributed to the successful launch of the Italian edition of Huffington Post, Business Insider and Mashable. Coordinator of Audiweb Technical Committee, the Italian Joint Industry Committee that collects and distributes quantitative and qualitative information on the use of the Internet and on-line systems in Italy.

Media Innovation Project Manager, Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), Belgium

Cătălina Dumbrăveanu is Media Innovation Project Manager at the Studies in Media, Innovation and Technology (SMIT) department of Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB).  Her work is focused on fostering innovation in media by supporting cross-border cooperation between European media professionals.  Previously, she gathered leadership experience in several European civil society organisations, public administration, and the start-up environment. She is a firm believer in the power of storytelling and is enthusiastic about intercultural communication, digital transformation, and development. 

Editor-in-Chief, The Straits Times & SPH's English/Malay/Tamil Media Group, Singapore

Warren Fernandez joined the paper in 1990 as a political reporter and rose to become a News Editor. He went on to serve as Foreign Editor and Deputy Editor.

Fernandez then joined Royal Dutch Shell in 2008 as a Global Manager for its Future Energy Project, before returning to the paper in February 2012 as its Editor. He assumed the role of Editor-in-Chief of Singapore Press Holdings’ (SPH) English/Malay/Tamil Media group (EMTM) from July 2016.

Fernandez graduated with First Class Honours from Oxford University, where he read Philosophy, Politics and Economics. He also holds a Master’s in Public Administration from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Executive Director World Editors Forum, WAN-IFRA, UK

Cherilyn Ireton heads up the World Editors Forum, the global network for editors within WAN-IFRA. She is a seasoned newspaper professional, having spent more than 20 years on South African newspapers, as journalist and editorial manger on the country's leading titles, the Sunday Times and Business Day. She rose to be Chief Operating Officer of BDFM Publishers, the business media joint venture between Pearson, owners of the Financial Times, and Times Media in South Africa which published Business Day newspaper, the Financial Mail magazine and Summit TV. She relocated to the UK in 2005 and owned an ran a London-based media consultancy, Presslinks, which advised a variety of international organizations and foreign governments.

Audience and Content Director North West, Reach plc, United Kingdom

Alison Gow is Audience and Content Director North West with Reach plc (formerly Trinity Mirror). She has experience implementing and assessing new ways of engaging audiences across the newsrooms, working with external partners to bring new ideas and technology to their journalism. This includes working with editors to champion exciting new ways of telling stories across multiple platforms, promoting a strong editorial culture of storytelling, reader awareness and collaboration across Reach plc's brands.

A journalist and blogger who has worked in the UK regional press for more than 20 years, she is a former editor of the Daily Post and Wales on Sunday.

Head of data journalism, Bayerischer Rundfunk (ARD), Germany

Uli Köppen leads the AI + Automation Lab at Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) – the public-service radio and television broadcaster of Bavaria, in Germany – and co-leads BR Data, the investigative data journalism team. Uli was also a 2019 Nieman Fellow at Harvard and MIT, where she focused
her studies on journalism automation and algorithmic accountability reporting. She oversees a team of journalists, coders, and designers specializing in investigative data stories, interactive storytelling, and experimentation with new research methods such as bots and machine learning. She is a founding member of butterland, a group dedicated to slow journalism whose projects include reporting done with victims of Turkey’s clampdown on press freedom. Together with her colleagues, she has won several awards including two CIVIS Media Prizes and a Philip Meyer Award as part of the first non-American team.

Engagement editor, News24, South Africa

Alet Law is the newsletter and engagement editor at News24 and former opinions editor. She holds a PhD in political communication from the University of Cape Town.

CEO, eldiario.es, Spain

Rosalía Lloret became the new CEO of eldiario.es in January 2020. Before that, she was the Director of Institutional and Member Relations of the Online Publishers Association in Europe. Her other previous positions include: Chief Digital Officer at Prisa News, where she lead the digital strategy and business development of El País, AS, Cinco Días and PRISA Magazines; and Chief Digital Officer of El Mundo, Marca, Expansión at Unidad Editorial. Earlier in her career, Lloret co-founded two of the largest internet projects in Spain: Terra.es and Ya.com. She also set up the internet division of RTVE, and served as the first director of RTVE.es as well as being a member of the Management Committee of RTVE. In addition to a degree in Journalism from the Universidad Complutense, she holds a master’s degree in Journalism from El País, and a master’s degree in Politics and Global Economy from the London School of Economics.

Kobus Louwrens
Kobus Louwrens is Co-Founder of Food For Mzansi and Strategy Director of YehBaby, a digital marketing agency. He is an award-winning environmental journalist, who previously published leading magazines and community newspapers in both South Africa and East Africa. This MBA graduate developed digital strategies for various small-to-medium enterprises and entrepreneurs. Under Kobus’s visionary leadership YehBaby has developed breakthrough digital marketing for numerous agricultural, wine and tourism brands.

Coach, Table Stakes Europe, France

Stéphane Mayoux went into print and then BBC broadcast journalism after a pan-European MBA that took him from France, to the UK and Germany. He has spent more than half his life abroad, including post-apartheid South Africa and likes to call himself a serial foreigner. He puts warmth, authenticity and performance at the centre of his coaching work. He enjoys looking at events and the world from as many perspectives as possible and very much welcomes coaching clients from diverse frames of reference. In June 2018, he qualified as a psychotherapeutic counsellor and he is now writing his dissertation to become an accredited psychotherapist. Stephane believes his practice informs and enriches his executive coaching work.

Three years ago, Stéphane joined BBC News Digital Pilots. The team created a digital transformation programme to support BBC journalists to deliver their stories to new and wider audiences, mainly - but not only - on digital platforms. The team worked with over 400 journalists, delivering 12 Digital Pilots. His coaching stance has been central to his work. Previously, he was Editor of BBC Africa TV, in charge of Focus on Africa on BBC World News. He has worked with the BBC since the mid-1990s, mainly in live radio and television news. He has managed the launch of new programmes and developed new platforms. He has recruited and nurtured talent in the UK and overseas as well as built and managed multi-cultural teams through change. Stéphane has also devised and delivered training programmes in London, Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

Executive Editor, The Globe and Mail, Canada

Angela Pacienza is the Executive Editor at The Globe and Mail. The role includes oversight of the programming, editing and visual journalism teams. From breaking stories as a beat reporter at The Canadian Press to launching Canada’s first video wire service and overseeing a massive newsroom re-org at The Globe and Mail, Angela’s speciality is driving culture change to create more nimble, inclusive and forward-thinking newsrooms. Angela is a graduate of the Online News Association’s Women’s Leadership Accelerator program and a mentor with Digital Women Leaders.

Ivor Price is a well-loved name in Afrikaans media. He is a TV and Radio presenter, columnist and co-founder of FoodForMzansi.co.za. The former SABC2 news anchor also presented the first four seasons of Landbouweekliks, a DStv show, in which he crisscrossed the country to interview the movers and shakers of Mansi’s agriculture industry. Other career highlights include a stint in London as a Foreign Correspondent and publishing leading community newspapers in Stellenbosch.

Synthesia is a start-up founded by a team of researchers and entrepreneurs from UCL, Stanford, TUM and Cambridge. Their mission is to take the lead in using artificial intelligence and video synthesis to create a new generation of content creation tools — tools that are empowering, effective and ethical, for everyone.

Director of Insights & Editor-in-Chief, WAN-IFRA, Germany

Dean is Director of Insights and Editor-in-Chief of WAN-IFRA, he is responsible for coordinating all activities related to the organisation's array of multimedia publications. He has more than 25 years’ experience working in the news publishing industry, much of that time spent researching, analysing, identifying and ultimately reporting about global media developments.

Head of Audience Engagement, Financial Times, United Kingdom

Hannah Sarney works as both an editor and advocate for the future of newsrooms, pushing for innovations that will improve reach, relevance and genuine engagement with readers. She helps lead a newsroom team that is focused on creating and implementing audience-first strategies. Her projects aim to drive editorial analytics ever deeper into newsroom practice and bring stakeholders together from the newsroom, product, analytics, marketing and events.

 

Senior Editor, BBC News, UK

Ramaa Sharma is a Senior Editor in BBC News. Her work includes driving digital transformation and innovation focused on bringing in new and underserved audiences to the BBC. More recently, after a year long fellowship Ramaa has been sharing her leadership journey as a woman of colour at the BBC. In addition she has designed and delivered a successful Race & Inclusion programme to the BBC’s News board last month.  

Ramaa is also a member of the BBC’s Coach Network and offers coaching and leadership masterclasses to executives across the BBC.

Digital transformation, content strategy and innovation consultant, WEF Board Member, UK

Dmitry is an expert in digital transformation, content strategy, and innovation. He worked for 21 years at the BBC in London where he was responsible for developing and implementing the BBC’s digital editorial offer for 40 non-English foreign language new services. Originally from Moscow, Russia, Dmitry worked in various editorial-development roles for the digital section of BBC News. These roles required liaison between editorial, product and strategy teams in order to drive innovation and develop new ways of reaching audiences, increasing engagement across the world and, crucially, driving culture change is newsrooms. He is an experienced digital leader in content creation, specialising in growing audiences across the world, driving editorial changes in newsrooms and adapting the way organisations work in digital space, especially around content innovation and audience engagement.
After his years at the BBC, he joined Culture Trip, a startup operating at the intersection of media and travel. He is now pursuing new adventures. Dmitry's main area of expertise is on the intersection between Editorial, Organisational, Strategy and Product sectors.

Thomas Thelen has been Editor-in-Chief of Aachener Zeitung and Aachener Nachrichten since August 1, 2018. He was responsible for the digital versions of both daily newspapers. Thelen studied sports science and sports journalism at the German Sports University in Cologne. He was employed as a permanent editor at the Aachen newspaper publishing house in 1998 and since then held various positions, including leading the technical processes team.

Live is editor storytelling and feature journalism, Dagens Næringsliv, Norway. Live has been central in developing the first couple of “content universes” across DN’s publishing platforms. Prior to joining Dagens Næringsliv thirteen years ago, she worked at VG.

Exec Director, Digital Revenue Network, WAN-IFRA

Nick runs WAN-IFRA's most advanced digital revenue programmes, including the Table Stakes Europe programme and the subscription focused eRev initiative, as well as managing our events and operations in Europe & Africa.

He started his career in London and has over fifteen years experience in innovative digital projects and collaborative working.

Before joining WAN-IFRA, he managed IT projects for ExxonMobil, Deutsche Bank and the European Patent Office, and facilitated the exec forums and conferences for the e-gov agency London Connects. He has a Diploma in Creativity, Innovation & Change from the Open University Business School.

Director of strategic initiatives, The Washington Post, USA

Elite Truong is the newly appointed director of strategic initiatives at the Washington Post. She heads their most cutting-edge digital experiments while serving as the newsroom’s liaison to the advertising department. She experiments with technology-driven editorial projects working with The Post’s journalism, technology and advertising teams.

Before joining The Post, Truong spent four years at Vox Media, three as the product manager for off-platform storytelling. She set product strategy and led the launch of nine editorial networks on new platforms including Apple News, AMP and AMP Stories, Facebook Instant Articles, live blogs and newsletters. She worked on revenue initiatives on emerging platforms and managed partnerships with Apple and Google. In 2017, Truong hosted and produced the Next Steps podcast for Poynter, where she interviewed journalists on their non-traditional career paths in and out of media. She wrote a column about media innovation for Poynter for two years. She served as a board member and education adviser for Online News Association and a career coach for the Digital Women Leaders program.

Tone is currently managing news editor in Aftenposten. She has worked in Aftenposten for 12 years and holds a Masters degree London School of Economics. 

Deputy Director, Digital Revenue Network, WAN-IFRA, France

Since joining WAN-IFRA in 1997, Valérie has accrued more than 20 years of experience as a media journalist. Currently, she is a team member of WAN-IFRA's Global Advisory division where she works with the Advisory Team in leading global consulting projects. She is also the Programme Lead for WAN-IFRA's top global conferences including: World News Media Congress and our Digital Media Event Series. She has contributed to numerous research reports, including  Alternative Revenue Streams for Publishers. As part of her research, Valérie interviewed numerous publishers who had found success discovering new business models - whether its through events, e-commerce, video or marketing services - Valérie has experience taking the pulse on what generates revenue for publishers.
