Managing DIrector, Funke Druck GmbH, the printing division of Funke Mediengruppe

Dr. Klemens Berktold has been Managing Director of the printing division (Funke Druck GmbH) of the Funke Media Group since 2011. In this function he is responsible for the printing centres in Essen, Hagen, Braunschweig and Erfurt. The printing centres produce the publisher's own daily newspapers, advertising papers and commercial jobs. Since 2017, the printing division has been operating an e-commerce platform for the production and distribution of newspapers from circulation 1. Before joining the Funke Media Group, Dr. Berktold held positions as Managing Director of various printing and prepress companies at Bertelsmann and in management consulting.

Associate Professor, School of Journalism at the US University of Texas at Austin

Iris Chyi (Ph.D.), author of Trial and Error: US Newspapers’ Digital Struggles toward Inferiority, is an Associate Professor in the School of Journalism at the US University of Texas at Austin. Her research addresses the economic viability of online news and identifies universal patterns of user demand for multi-platform newspapers. Her “Ramen Noodles Theory” suggests that online news, like ramen noodles, is an inferior good. Chyi has received many research and teaching awards and has published more than 40 journal articles and book chapters. Information about her research is available at irischyi.com.

Managing Director Newspaper Printing

Michael Fingerhuth, 52 years old, trained compositor, over 15 years experience in the Swiss newspaper printing market. Since CH Media was founded in October 2018, he has been Head of Newspaper Printing with two printing plants in Switzerland. Previously Managing Director of NZZ Media Services and Sales Manager at NZZ Print. Further training in sales and marketing, MBA, SUNY Albany and GSBA Zurich. Resident in the Zurich area.

Head of Process Management & IT, AS Printing Plants

Stefan Fricke was born in 1975 in Germany. After having finished school, he made an apprenticeship to become an offset printer. Subsequently, he acquired specific knowledge through his training as a Master Printer and the subsequent further training as a Certified technical Business Administrator (IHK). He began his professional career at Axel Springer SE in the year 2000 in the Axel Springer Printing Plant in Ahrensburg, Germany.

Afterwards, he made his way through several stations within the technical departments to the overarching production management of the Axel Springer Print Houses in Ahrensburg, Essen-Kettwig and Berlin-Spandau. Since 2015 he is responsible for IT, process management and innovation of the three Axel Springer Print Sites.

Under the guidance of Mr. Fricke, the employees of the Axel Springer Print Plants are successfully researching 3D printing, Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. At the Axel Springer Print Sites these technologies are closely linked to the topic of maintenance and cost optimisation.

Managing Partner, Multisense Institute for Sensory Marketing, Berlin

Sebastian Haupt is a consumer psychologist and works as a science journalist, lecturer and marketing consultant. He teaches marketing psychology at various universities, worked as a qualitative market researcher for over 10 years and is now managing partner of the Multisense Institute, where he advises companies such as Deutsche Bahn and TUI Cruises, medium-sized companies such as skin care specialist Dermasence and savings banks and insurance companies.

Together with Olaf Hartmann, he developed the ARIVA model for the sensory optimisation of products, communication and sales processes and described the haptic effect in multisensory marketing in the standard marketing work "Touch!“. On behalf of the Creatura Initiative, the Multisense Institute recently produced “The Power of Print”, the world’s first meta-analysis of the advertising impact of print, based on 300 studies. Sebastian Haupt is also a member of the Association for Consumer Research and the Society for Applied Business Psychology.

Design Consultant

Hans Peter Janisch has been a newspaper designer and consultant to the newspaper industry since 1989. His work focuses on the redesign of publications as well as consulting on all issues pertaining to the visual appearance of a publishing house. Over the years he has designed numerous newspapers and weekly journals in Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Bosnia- Herzegovina, Kazakhstan, Slovenia and many other countries. Next to the work of implementing creative design concepts Hans Peter is a lecturer at the Society for News Design, the Center of Journalism Haus Busch, the Journalist Academy and for the world organization of newspapers, the WAN- IFRA.

Head of Jobs & Career, SÜDKURIER GmbH Medienhaus

Maria Kainz has been in charge of the job and career market at SÜDKURIER Medienhaus since the beginning of the year 2019. After completing her studies at the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University, she joined the product management department for business & local commerce, where she has held countless customer meetings, developed many new products and formulated customer solutions. In her current position, she and her team are building up a new and above all target group-oriented product portfolio in the job market. Always with the goal of making recruiters and applicants happy.

Business Unit Manager Competence Centre

Elias Merklinghaus works as Business Unit Manager Competence Centre at the newspaper printing company Süddeutscher Verlag Zeitungsdruck GmbH, Zamdorfer Straße 40, 81677 Munich, Germany.

Director Middle East, WAN-IFRA, Germany

She is responsible for all WAN-IFRA activities in the countries of the Middle East,
working closely with the company's members in that region.
Previously she has held various leading positions at WAN-IFRA. As Director of Marketing
and Membership, she was Head of the marketing and PR team with responsibility for
all global marketing activities. In this capacity, she introduced a new logo and dynamic
new corporate identity.
As Director of Membership she acted as the contact for all members worldwide, while
also introducing a new membership model and structure.
Upon joining WAN-IFRA, initially as Head of IT, she implemented two editorial systems
at the company.
Before coming to WAN-IFRA, she worked for Monotype in the position of Head of
Application. During her time at that company she played an instrumental role in the
market launch of a new editorial system.
She began her career at ATEX, the leading system supplier for editorial systems, where
she worked as a trainer and application specialist. Her duties in this position included
training editors and journalists in leading media houses in both Germany and the UK.

Senior Market Consultant, EMGE & Co, UK

Gary Thomson, BA (Hons), has been analysing paper markets for more than 25 years. He is a leading market research consultant in the Paper Industry, specialising in Printing & Writing Paper and Newsprint markets for the consulting firm, EMGE & Co. EMGE produces forecasts and research information in the form of multi-client reports, individual market sector research projects and commissioned market surveys. For over quarter of a century, EMGE has been publishing regular global graphic paper market reports and forecasts, including the EMGE World Newsprint Markets Report. Gary began his career in 1993, working for Pulp & Paper International (PPI) as a paper market reporter, focusing on packaging and wastepaper markets. In 1997, he joined International Papermaker magazine, where he continued reporting on the world’s paper business. In 2001, he moved to Germany to become Editor-in-Chief of International Paper World (IPW) magazine. He was recruited by EMGE in 2004, and has since become one of the firm’s leading consultants, as well as the chief writer of its forecast reports. He regularly makes presentations on EMGE forecasts at events and conferences around the world. In his free time, Gary volunteers with the Salvation Army, working with homeless people.

Content Marketing and Media Consultant

Jon Watkins is a content marketing and media consultant currently supporting a number of agencies and media owners through a variety of transformational activities, including repositioning their print products, moving to multi-channel and multi-platform strategies, launching new products (including in print), and assessing and improving editorial and content strategy and performance. Jon was previously Business Director at SevenC3 and now runs a content marketing agency focused on “quality content that cuts through the noise”, called Rooido.com. He is a journalist by trade.

Managing Director, Styria Print Group and Styria Media Design

42 years old, married, 2 children (3 and 5 years), trained media designer for digital and print media, studied “Communication Technology Printing” at Bergische Universität, Wuppertal, Germany, 2.5 years assistant to the technical director at Westdeutsche Zeitung (Rheinisch-Bergische Druckerei GmbH & Co. KG), since 11 years in Austria at Druck Styria GmbH & Co KG in various positions and since 2016 Managing Director of the Styria Print Group and Styria Media Design.

WAN-IFRA

Manfred Werfel was WAN-IFRA’s Deputy CEO until he retired on 1 June 2019. He was responsible for the Expo business of the association. He also managed the World Printers Forum, the print community within WAN-IFRA.

Since 1996 Werfel was part of WAN-IFRA’s management team. Over time he was responsible for Research, WAN-IFRA Reports, Expert Committees, Consulting, Training, Print Quality Projects, Events, Innovation Projects, World Press Trends, World News Media Congress, World Printers Forum and Expo. In 2012 he acted as Interim CEO.
