Editor for publishing strategy and visual journalism, Dagens Næringsliv, Norway. WEF Board member.

Ingeborg Volan is editor for publishing strategy and visual journalismat Dagens Næringsliv, Norway’s most prominent business newspaper. Previously, she held the position of director of audience engagement. She’s an online news veteran who early saw the possibilities of reaching audiences better online. She’s very passionate about understanding news users and letting their needs shape journalism. Among other roles, Ingeborg has previously worked as the first head of social media at the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) and lead the NRKbeta innovation crew. She’s also taught digital journalism at the Norwegian Institute for Journalism, been head of newsroom innovation at Adresseavisen and president of the Norwegian Online News Organization.

Head of Audience Engagement, Financial Times, United Kingdom

Hannah Sarney works as both an editor and advocate for the future of newsrooms, pushing for innovations that will improve reach, relevance and genuine engagement with readers. She helps lead a newsroom team that is focused on creating and implementing audience-first strategies. Her projects aim to drive editorial analytics ever deeper into newsroom practice and bring stakeholders together from the newsroom, product, analytics, marketing and events.

 

Editor in Chief Digital, Stuttgarter Zeitung, Germany

Swantje Dake is editor-in-chief digital of the Stuttgarter Zeitung and the Stuttgarter Nachrichten since 1 June 2018. She is responsible for the editorial orientation and strategy of the digital products of the two Stuttgart newspaper brands. Prior to this position, Swantje headed the Digital Unit, the joint online editorial office of Stuttgarter Zeitung and Stuttgarter Nachrichten. Over the past two years, she has also played a decisive role in the development of cross-media editorial work. Dake will now assume overall editorial responsibility for the digital products of the press house in Stuttgart.

Deputy Editor-in-Chief, NRC, The Netherlands

Elske Schouten is deputy editor-in-chief of NRC, a quality newspaper in The Netherlands. Together with the rest of the team she is responsible for the editorial coverage and implementation of digital strategy. NRC has been focussing on digital first publishing, newsletters and has launched three successful podcasts. Prior to this, Elske was the editor of the Foreign Desk, responsible for international coverage and NRC’s network of 22 foreign correspondents. She has worked in Jakarta for five years as NRC’s correspondent for Southeast Asia. Educated as a biologist, Elske started at NRC in 2005 as a business reporter. She lives in Amsterdam, has two daughters and is an enthusiastic amateur pianist.

Bénédicte Autret is Head of Strategic Relations - News & Publishers, UK, Ireland, France & Benelux and head of EMEA Strategic Relationships. She joined the Google Syndication team in 2005 and has embraced the world of partnership with publishers for the past 11 years. First working with traditional publishers across Europe and in 2010 refocusing on the UK market, managing the relationship with publishers such as DMGT, Telegraph, Guardian and Haymarket just to name a few. Benedicte then pivoted to work closely with UK Telcos and broadcasters starting a conversation with existing partners and prospects on new platform technology such as dynamic ad insertion capability. In May 2016, Benedicte joined the newly formed team of European Strategic Relationships, engaging with the news industry in UK, Ireland, France and Benelux. Prior to joining Google, Benedicte worked for WILink Europe. Benedicte holds a degree from the EDHEC Business School Bachelor programme.

Anntao leads the development of the GNI data tools, News Consumer Insights, News Tagging
Guide and Realtime Content Insights, which have been used by thousands of news publishers
around the world. Anntao's focus is to build data frameworks that provide actionable
recommendations to News publishers in order to grow their overall audience value. 

Prior to Google, he worked in IT consultancy and military aeronautics, obtained a Master's
degree in International Business from Toulouse Business School and developed its own VR
gaming app.

Author and Former Chief News Strategist and Chief Product & Technology Officer, The Wall Street Journal, USA

Louise is currently the Chief News Strategist and Chief Product & Technology Officer at The Wall Street Journal. She built and runs a large unit there called Digital Experience & Strategy (DXS), which includes the Journal’s product engineering, design and product management teams that work across the commercial and newsroom side of the WSJ. Louise also oversees the newsroom’s content strategy, data science, community and audience development teams. She oversees the daily news report in a rotation of senior masthead editors and has set forth major parts of the news strategy. Prior to this role, Louise spent more than a decade at The New York Times. During that span, she helped lead multimedia and strategy initiatives and worked on ground-breaking projects as an investigative reporter that led to multiple billion-dollar plus financial settlements, government reforms and legal convictions.

Felicity Thomas is Head of Talent Development at the Financial Times, leading on the talent and performance agenda. She has worked across a number of sectors- higher and executive education, professional services, not-for-profit, public services and media.

Digital transformation, content strategy and innovation consultant, WEF Board Member, UK

Dmitry is an expert in digital transformation, content strategy, and innovation. He worked for 21 years at the BBC in London where he was responsible for developing and implementing the BBC’s digital editorial offer for 40 non-English foreign language new services. Originally from Moscow, Russia, Dmitry worked in various editorial-development roles for the digital section of BBC News. These roles required liaison between editorial, product and strategy teams in order to drive innovation and develop new ways of reaching audiences, increasing engagement across the world and, crucially, driving culture change is newsrooms. He is an experienced digital leader in content creation, specialising in growing audiences across the world, driving editorial changes in newsrooms and adapting the way organisations work in digital space, especially around content innovation and audience engagement.
After his years at the BBC, he joined Culture Trip, a startup operating at the intersection of media and travel. He is now pursuing new adventures. Dmitry's main area of expertise is on the intersection between Editorial, Organisational, Strategy and Product sectors.

Pulitzer prize-winning journalist, digital wellness educator and Acumen fellow, Spain

Mar Cabra is a Pulitzer prize-winning journalist, digital wellness educator and Acumen fellow working on raising awareness on how technology is changing the way we interact with ourselves, each other and as a society. She led the technology and data work for the Panama Papers investigation and suffered burn-out as a result. She is co-founder of The Self-Investigation, an initiative that provides a variety of solutions aimed at improving journalists’ wellbeing and also co-founder of OdiseIA, an independent, objective and multidisciplinary institute in Spain that promotes an ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence. She writes a bi-monthly column in Spanish newspaper El Confidencial on digital wellness.

Head of the Science Department, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Germany

Dr. Marlene Weiß is Head of the Science Department at Süddeutsche Zeitung. After studies in Zurich, Paris and Lausanne, doctorate in theoretical physics at the Cern research center near Geneva, she started her career at SdZ in March 2010 as trainee, moving into Science editor, responsible for climate, environment and physics. Since September 2020 she leads the science department.

Managing Editor, El País, Spain

A forerunner of digital journalism in Spanish, he has led several of the major online information projects in Spanish.

He studied Information Sciences at  Universidad Complutense de Madrid. In 1995 he began working at El Mundo as an editor. Later he went to the society section, also as editor, until 1999 when he was appointed head of the Sports section and, nine months later, editor-in-chief. From there, in 2001, he planned the integration of the sports sections of the paper and the Internet. During a season he also served as editor-in-chief of the international section. Between 2002 and 2006 he was deputy director of elmundo.es.

In 2007 he left El Mundo with Gumersindo Lafuente to participate in the launch of soitu.es, a digital outlet that won two awards from the Online News Association (ONA) as the best non-English media during its two years of existence.

After the closure of soitu.es in 2009, he was appointed deputy director of El País to promote digital publishing.

In 2013, he was awarded the Nieman-Berkman Fellow in Journalistic Innovation, thanks to which he spent a year at Harvard and MIT studying how technological innovation is changing traditional media companies.

In 2014, he was hired by the US network Univision as vice president of the digital area of ​​Univision Noticias, a team that under his direction won numerous awards and recognitions, including three Ortega y Gasset Awards.

In June 2018, he was appointed deputy director of El País as part of the management team of the new director Soledad Gallego-Díaz.

Research Officer, QUEST Project, City, University of London, UK

Barbara Schofield worked as a reporter, producer and editor in BBC broadcast newsrooms and in features production for 15 years before moving into academic life at City, University of London. She was until recently Programme Director of Undergraduate Journalism at City, while also working on the Erasmus+ INSPIRE project to encourage inclusivity in higher education through training in media skills. She has been active on several other EU-funded partnership projects including MicroEuropa and the Global Environmental Journalism Training Initiative (GEJI). As Research Officer on the QUEST project she has devised an updated curriculum for MA Science Journalism programmes, and a Toolkit to encourage accurate and effective science journalism – available in May 2021.

Harrison van der Vliet is deputy editor-in-chief of NRC, a quality newspaper in The Netherlands. Together with the rest of the team, he is responsible for the editorial coverage and implementation of digital strategy. NRC has been focussing on digital first publishing, newsletters and has launched three successful podcasts.

Lea Eberle has been Project Officer and Head of Strategy at EqualVoice since 2020. She began her career at Ringier in 2016, working in a number of financial roles. Eberle studied banking and finance at the University of Zurich. Lea will present on the new initiative by the Ringier Group titled "EqualVoice" which it aims to increase the visibility of women in the media and give them an equal voice.

Stine Eckert is Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at Wayne State University. Her research focuses on the intersections of media, gender and minorities, the democratic potential of social media, online harassment, public spheres, and women in journalism. www.stineeckert.com

Assistant Professor of Journalism, University of Georgia’s College of Journalism and Mass Communication, USA

Karin Assmann is Assistant Professor of Journalism in the University of Georgia’s College of Journalism and Mass Communication. Her research is in media management, unionization, newsroom practice, and community and audience engagement. She is a former reporter and correspondent for the German news magazine Spiegel TV. Karin has written, reported and produced for radio, broadcast and online publications before turning to academia.

Chairwoman, ProQuote Media and Editor at Visite magazine, NDR TV, Germany

Edith Heitkämper is Chairwoman of the board of directors at ProQuote Media and Editor for the health magazine Visite on the German NDR television. She also writes about medical and social topics for Stern, Brigitte and Psychologie Heute. She previously worked many years as an author for ARD, including for Tagesschau, Tagesthemen and Panorama.

Head of news tools development, Sud Ouest, France

Sophie Lemaire is in charge of the development of editorial tools as Head of News Tools Development at Sud Ouest, France. She is an expert on the use of web tools, the  management of the editorial system and editorial/IT interface, as well as digital transformation. She has been a member of the steering committee of the general editorial department of Sud Ouest - in charge of the development and enhancement of the editorial offer for digital subscribers. From September 2019 - May 2021, she was part of the "Arche" project group, in charge of steering the change of CMS in the editorial offices of Groupe Sud Ouest and the evolution of the organisations accompanying the digital transformation of the group's editorial offices.

Product Manager Sports, NDC Mediagroep, The Netherlands

Ard Boer is Product Manager Sports at NDC Mediagroep and has over 15 years experience in media. Ard started out as a concept developer in the music industry when it was about to go under due to piracy and lack of physical sales, developing e g a hit prediction tool with AI technology. A decade later the music industry is thriving due to the success of paid streaming services. For the past few years Ard has been working as Product Manager Sports in the news publishing business. In this environment Ard is looking for new ways to produce, distribute and monetize content including by deploying new technologies such as AI to improve the impact of NDC mediagroep on their readership.

Cecilia Campbell is a Swedish media journalist with over 20 years experience reporting on the news publishing industry internationally. She is the CMO of Swedish tech start-up United Robots, based in Malmö. Her work at United Robots includes advising publishers on how to free up reporter time and drive revenue through newsroom automation. Previously she worked for WAN-IFRA, co-leading the reader revenue group and authoring the 2018 report Engaged Readers Don’t Churn – Retention Lessons for Digital Subcriptions.

WAN-IFRA Expert Advisor and Managing Director, KOGO Associate Partners, Belgium

Luc Rademakers is a WAN-IFRA Expert Advisor and Managing Director at KOGO Associate Partners, a strategy consulting company in media, among other sectors. He has a broad experience leading media transformation in executive roles for print, digital and audiovisual. He is Senior Advisor at PMP, an international strategy company (HQ in Paris).

Lilah Raptopoulos is the US head of Audience Engagement, based in New York. She leads a team of engagement and social editors focused on US growth. She also co-hosts the FT podcast Culture Call and writes regularly for Life & Arts.

Dean is Director of Insights and Editor-in-Chief of WAN-IFRA, he is responsible for coordinating all activities related to the organisation's array of multimedia publications. Having recently assumed this key management role as Deputy Director of NOVO, Diogo Agostinho has a vast experience in Project Management, Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Ioana Blaut started her career as journalist and continued to grow in various editorial and business roles in the media sector. She later founded a magazine and served as CEO and Chief Editor. Before taking up the Director of Business Development and Sales role at Ringier Axel Springer, for the Ring Publishing platform, she worked in the IT sector for companies such as Oracle, in sales management and marketing roles. With her customer-centered sales vision, she is building growth opportunities worldwide for the innovative all-in Cloud Solution, Ring Publishing.

Passioned about technology innovations but at the same time anthropology, Ioana enjoys following emerging technologies and the impact of it on society. Ioana holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy-Anthropology and an MBA degree from Hamburg School of Business Administration. She lives in Hamburg, Germany. 

Daniel Schraeder, Content Development Manager, Heise online, Germany

After starting his career in print, Daniel worked as an Online Journalist, Youtuber and professional Blogger since the early 2000s. Obvious changes in the media business made clear: Publishing content may change the world, but someone needs to pay the bill. Since almost ten years, he is working on business models for online publishing that fit the needs and wishes of Creators, Readers and Publishers. He is working for Heise, the leading German IT publisher, since 2012 in various roles.

Petter has worked as a journalist covering economy in five years, two of them in DN. The last year he has been working more strategic on different projects, Fantasy Funds amongst others. His main goal is to ensure DN engages more young readers.

Millrod is Director of Editorial Technology at Newsday, where he has been involved in one transformation after another since he began working at Newsday as a copy editor in 1985. Millrod was involved in the original purchase of a Unisys Hermes system in 1999 and was the project manager for a redesign of Newsday with Mario Garcia in 2004. Before coming to Newsday, he worked at two small newspapers in Stamford and Greenwich, Connecticut, as a city editor and news editor. But Newsday was his hometown paper on Long Island, and the place he wanted to be since he was a student journalist at Stony Brook University, where he has taught news literacy as well. He’s currently working on a project to upgrade Newsday’s systems to the next generation of Atex’s publishing software.

Alberto Mari

Alberto has spent the last 25 years in the media industry, taking care of content creation, distribution and monetization. A master's degree in philosophy followed by an experience in the publishing industry as an editor kicked-off a career focused on the digital space. In large multinational organizations – such as Microsoft, Fox and Outbrain – he managed marketing and advertising teams, combining the latest technologies to achieve the most efficient growth in content monetization. He recently completed a training path on Business Sustainability at the University of Cambridge and joined Atex as Head of Business Development and Sustainability.
