This workshop will explore current practices of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and immersive 360 videos. We are going to analyse how these technologies can enrich journalism across the globe and review the latest developments in the virtual reality market, latest investments, immersive video capture techniques, dissemination via mobile VR players, ways to develop virtual reality apps and generate ideas about how immersive technologies can make a significant impact in future newsrooms.
This year's meeting will focus on the topic of media transformation. As an introduction, Nancy Lane will share insight from the Local Media Association : "We think publishing companies must innovate on the core side of their business (print product) but they also need to develop separate digital business units and dedicate a certain level of investment for this activity. We also believe that small and mid-sized companies have a natural talent for the organization of events and that they should make it a part of the overall strategy, with the appropriate resources/staffing" says Lane. "We actually have strong feelings (with data to back it up) on how to organize and staff all three areas". Lane will be joined by Peter Newton, Chief Revenue Officer for GateHouse Media, who will share his company’s impressive transformation strategy (including the creation of Propel Marketing that is now a $48 million business for them across many small and mid-size markets), and Rick Ducey, Senior Analyst with BIA-Kelsey, who will share interesting research and industry trends on a wide variety of subjects.
Special guest: Andiara Petterle will give an update on the very unique paid content strategy of Grupo RBS located in Brazil.
The Opening Ceremony of the 68th World News Media Congress will include the Welcome Speeches from WAN-IFRA, local authorities and partners, a tribute to Mr. Guillermo Cano, the Golden Pen of Freedom Award Ceremony and a vital discussion on the challenges of being a LATAM media executive today.
The Ceremony will include a unique show from the internationally recognised ballet company "Colegio del Cuerpo" of Cartagena de Indias.
The President of WAN-IFRA, the President of the Colombian Newspaper and News Publishers Association - ANDIARIOS, and the President of World Editors Forum, will welcome the events participants and open the 68th edition of WAN-IFRA's World News Media Congress.
Awarded since 1961, the Golden Pen of Freedom is given in recognition of outstanding action, in writing or deed, to an individual, a group or an institution in the cause of press freedom. The award is traditionally given during the opening ceremony; an occasion to focus the world's media attention on the fundamental issue of press freedom.
The Colegio del Cuerpo (ECDC) was founded in 1997 in Cartagena de Indias by Masters Alvaro Restrepo (Colombia) and Marie France Delieuvin (France), and has become one of the pioneering proposals in arts education in Colombia and worldwide. Through its training activities, research and creation initiatives and awareness campaigns, the ECDC has contributed to the artistic, professional and human development of 8,300 children and youth from vulnerable populations in the city, who have integrated its ranks and programmes.
The piece ¡NEGRA! ANGER! stems from a show El Colegio del Cuerpo performed at an event of for a Local Anti-Racism Observatory (ODAR). The music for this show is from the great singer, pianist and African-American rights defender, Nina Simone. Her extraordinary and tragic life, the intensity of her commitment, pain and suffering that fueled her existence, are present in her voice and piano.
You are invited to celebrate with us immediately after the Opening Ceremony of the 68th World News Media Congress! Enjoy drinks and snacks at the Esplanada de San Francisco, the beautiful plaza right in front of the Cartagena Convention Centre. Soak up the atmosphere on a magical night!

Maintaining a direct link with your audience is critical. While publishers have increased their use of distribution platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, Apple News, and Google, they also want to maintain a unique destination for their readers. And while distribution platforms depend on the quality news provided by publishers, they do not feel responsible for sharing the costs of good journalism, nor do they want any distractions that might affect their revenue. How will this tension resolve itself?
Free Basics, Facebook’s initiative to bring the Internet to the “next-billion” at no charge, is a crucial element of zero-rating and net neutrality discussions worldwide. The Financial Times has an unusual history of choosing bold over conservative, even when dealing with sensitive issues like digital ad revenue. The choice to explore viewability, cost-per-hour metrics over CPM, and click-through-rates (CTR) is a great example. The Financial Times' VP of Advertising in the Americas will take us through the successes and limitations of this revolutionary approach.
The Global Alliance for Media Innovation (GAMI) partners will report on the work of various media labs and centers, innovation initiatives, and processes observed around the world.
GAMI is a WAN-IFRA initiative that aims to found the ground for a renewed innovation ecosystem in the news media industry. It is a global community of stakeholders from the news media world: publishers, suppliers, start-ups, academic and research centers.
